8Cb: Gas Exchange (part 1)

Learning objectives:
-    state the meaning of ventilation
- Describe the function of lungs
- Explain how the structure of the lungs allows for efficient
gas exchange.

Key words: Breathing, Ventilation, Mucus, Cilia, Gas exchange, Diffusion, Surface
area, Capillaries
Have You Ever Thought That Breathing Is a Great Miracle?
There is no being that has to put effort into breathing.
The interior and exterior conditions are created for man in the way that allows him to
breathe easily.

The air we breathe is protected due to a splendidly wonderful order created by Allah.

The slightest change in this order can result in dangerous consequences that might lead
to the destruction of all living beings. This is because the atmosphere is a wonderful
mixture, where special conditions required for life are brought together, and it works
flawlessly.
“He has given you everything you have asked Him for. If you tried to number
Allah’s blessings, you could never count them. Man is indeed wrongdoing,
ungrateful.. (Surah Ibrahim, 34)

Qatar- Three powerful breathing
exercises
MENAFN- Gulf Times, in
Qatar, offers three breathing
exercises. Before you sit for
each of these breaths, we
recommend getting out any
excess energy in your body, like
shaking your limbs, hands, feet,
or rolling your neck and moving
around. Once you settle down,
sit upright and elevated with
your spine and neck straight and
your face, tongue, jaw and
shoulders relaxed. Once you
become familiar with these
breaths, you can practice them
with your eyes closed.
No energy is required
Movement of substances move from high to low

E.g. Going down a slide

This is how O2 and CO2 move in our

bodies
LO: To state the meaning of ventilation

Breathing is when the muscles

between the ribs and in the
diaphragm change the size of
the lungs. This movement is
called ventilation.

Inhale: Breath in
 the size of the
lungs increases
Exhale: Breath out
 the size of the
lungs decreases
LO: To describe the function of the lungs

Gas exchange is the intake of

oxygen and the excretion of carbon
dioxide at the lung surface. Oxygen
moves into the blood and carbon
dioxide moves out of the blood.
Cellular respiration is the process
that releases energy from the food. It
happens in all cells.

Can you explain how these 3

processes all depend on
each other?
LO: To describe the function of the lungs
The respiratory system are the organs
and tissues that help your body to exchange gases
between the air and the blood

Learning objectives:

1. What gases are involved with gas 1. Describe the ventilation

process
exchange?

2. What organ does gas exchange 2. Describe how the lungs are
happen in? adapted to their function

3. What process allows gas exchange

3. Explain how the structure
to take place? of the lungs allows for
efficient gas exchange.
4. What structure in the lungs gives
an increase in surface area?
LO: Explain how the structure of the lungs allows for efficient gas exchange.

Alveolus
Bronchioles lead to air sacs called alveoli.
They are the sites of gas exchange.
LO: Explain how the structure of the lungs allows for efficient gas exchange.
LO: Explain how the structure of the lungs allows for efficient gas exchange.
Alveoli provide an efficient surface
for gas exchange because:
1. They are thin for rapid diffusion.
2. They are moist for diffusion of
gases.
3. They are surrounded by lots of
blood vessels (capillaries) to
carry oxygen away and maintain
the gradient.
4. They have a very large surface
area.
