Session 7

Summer Enhancement Program

in Mathematics
Mr. Anthony F. Balatar Jr.
Trainer
Key Topics
• Describes and illustrates parallel, intersecting, and
perpendicular lines.
• Draws perpendicular and parallel lines using a ruler and a set
square.
• Describes and illustrates different angles (right, acute, and
obtuse) using models.
• Describes the attributes/properties of triangles and
quadrilaterals using concrete objects or models.
Key Topics
• Identifies and describes triangles according to sides and
angles.
• Identifies and describes the different kinds of
quadrilaterals: square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid,
and rhombus.
• Relates triangles to quadrilaterals
• Relates one quadrilateral to another quadrilateral (e.g.
square to rhombus).
Definition of Terms
Types of Lines

• Parallel Lines – straight lines that always stay the same

distance away from each other. Lines that do not meet or
intersect to each other.
• Intersecting Lines – lines that meet at exactly one point.
• Perpendicular Lines – lines that intersect and makes a 90°
angle with another line.
Definition of Terms
Classification of Angles

• Acute angle – an angle whose measure is greater than 0°

but less than 180°.
• Right angle – an angle whose measures exactly 90°.
• Obtuse angle – an angle whose measure is greater than 90°
but less than 180°.
Definition of Terms
- Complementary Angles – two angles involved when the
sum is 90°.
Example: 36° and 54° are complementary angles because
36° + 54° = 90°
- Supplementary Angles – two angles that has the sum of
180°
Example: 136° and 44° are supplementary angles
because 136° + 44° = 180°
Definition of Terms
Basic Concepts in Geometry
• Point – it is represented by a dot, a location in space or a
pinpoint. It has no dimension, no width, no length and no
thickness.
• Line – a straight infinite path joining an infinite number of
points. The path can be infinite in both directions.
• Plane – a set of points joined together from a flat surface
that can extend without end in all directions.
Definition of Terms
Basic Concepts in Geometry
• Ray – (a subset of a line) a straight line that begins at a
point and continues outward in one direction.
• Line segment – a subset of a line with endpoints at both
ends. A straight path that has a beginning and end
endpoints.
PRACTICE
Direction: Tell whether each of the following represents the idea of a point, a line
or a plane.
1. Edge of a book 11. top of a box
2. A cartolina 12. four corners of a room
3. The screen of a laptop 13. side of a blackboard
4. The tip of a ballpen 14. curtain rod
5. A speck of dust 15. star in the sky
6. A period 16. edge of a table
7. A meterstick 17. cover of a book
8. A cable wire 18. tip of a pen
9. The tip of a needle 19. a clothesline
10. Ceiling of a house 20. a grain of rice
Definition of Terms
Polygons
- It is a closed plane figure bounded by three or more line segments.
- It comes from the Greek words “poly” and “gonia” means many
angles.
Triangle – 3 sides Octagon – 8 sides
Quadrilateral – 4 sides Nonagon – 9 sides
Pentagon – 5 sides Decagon – 10 sides
Hexagon – 6 sides Undecagon – 11 sides
Heptagon – 7 sides Dodecagon -12 sides
Definition of Terms
Triangles
- A polygon formed by three segments joining three non – collinear
points. Triangles can be classified according to:

A. Sides
- scalene triangle – triangle with no congruent sides
- isosceles triangle – triangle with two sides congruent
- equilateral triangle – triangle with all sides are congruent.
Definition of Terms
Triangles
- A polygon formed by three segments joining three non – collinear
points. Triangles can be classified according to:

B. Angles
- acute triangle – triangle with all angles are acute.
- obtuse triangle – triangle with one angle is obtuse.
- right triangle – triangle with one angle is right.
- equiangular triangle – with all angles congruent
Definition of Terms
Quadrilaterals
- A polygon formed by four line segments joining four non –
collinear points. The types of quadrilaterals are:
A. Trapezoid – a quadrilateral with exactly a pair of parallel sides.
B. Trapezium – a quadrilateral with no parallel sides.
C. Kite – a special quadrilateral with two distinct pairs of adjacent
and congruent sides.
D. Parallelogram – a quadrilateral with two pairs congruent and
parallel sides.
Definition of Terms
Quadrilaterals
- Special Parallelograms:
A. Rectangle – a parallelogram with four right angles.
B. Rhombus – a parallelogram with four congruent sides.
- it is also known as “push over” square.
C. Square – a parallelogram with four congruent sides and four
congruent angles. Thus, rectangle + rhombus = square
PRACTICE
Direction: Classify the following as TRUE or FALSE.
1. Every rectangle is a quadrilateral.
2. Every rectangle is a parallelogram.
3. Every trapezoid is a parallelogram.
4. Every square is a rectangle.
5. Every parallelogram is a square.
6. Every trapezoid is a quadrilateral.
7. Every square is a rhombus.
8. Every rhombus is a parallelogram.
9. A square is both a rectangle and a rhombus.
10. A rectangle is a quadrilateral and a parallelogram.
