CHAPTER-1 - INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
R.C.C. framed structure is an assembly of foundation, column, beams, and slabs which are inter-connected with each other so as to make
a complete unit. The transfer of load in a R.C.C. framed structure takes place from the slabs through the beams to the column and then to the
lower columns and finally to the foundation/footings, which then transfers it to the soil underneath.
Various Methods are used for RCC Structure Design are Working Stress Method, Ultimate Load Method & Limit State Method
Presently the above mention method is theoretical and time consuming method in which design of building structure is take more much
time as well as chances of error is more. To reduce the time and make more accuracy in design using some software, by which design and
analysis are done easily. The generally software using in the design and analysis are Staad Pro and Etabs.
STAAD.Pro and ETABS are very modern day design and analysis software available in the market. Many design companies are using
these software’s for design and analysis of their construction projects.
So this project work deals with the comparative analysis of the results obtained from the design of a multi - storey building structure when
designed by using STAAD.PRO and ETABS software separately.
The main benefit of using these design and analysis software is that they not only make construction economic but also make it easier and
less time consuming. Almost all types of loads and geometric configurations whether regular or irregular shape can be handled by both the
software efficiently. 3D frame analyses are very tough and time consuming to perform manually with high accuracy; both STAAD.PRO and
ETABS make this easier and very quickly.

CHAPTER-3 – LITERATURE REVIEW
Shweta A.Wagh et al. in 2014 has studied 4 various multi-storey R.C.C. buildings of G+12, G+16, G+20 & G+24 storey and then she designed
and analyzed all these structures in STAAD.PRO and then she took the result and compared the cost and design aspects.
D. Ramya et al. (2015) has completed the comparative study of a G+10 storey building using ETABS and STAAD.PRO softwares. The
Design and Analysis of Multi-storey (G+10) building using STAAD.PRO and ETABS software was done to calculate the forces, bending
moment , stresses , strain , deformation and deflection for a complex multi- storey structure.
Balwinder Lallotra et al. (2017) has done “Comparative Study of Structural Analysis and Design Software - STAAD Pro, SAP-2000 &
ETABS Software”.
Mohammad Kalim at al. (2018) had also done a comparative study on the analysis and design of Regular Configuration building by using
STAAD.PRO and ETABS Software separately wherein he has compared the requirement of steel as output given by both the software. Further
he has also analysed the design values with manual values.
V. Ramanjaneyulu et al. in 2018 has concluded a comparative study on analysis and design of Regular and Irregular multi storey building
by using STAAD.PRO and ETABS Software. He has compared the Bending Moment, Shear Force, Axial Force, Reinforcement details
comparison for Regular Structure as well as irregular shape structure.
Isha Bedi et al. (2017): She has proposed a Comparative study of high rise R.C.C. framed Structures by using STAAD.PRO, ETABS, and SAP
software. From her proposed research and analysis, we can conclude that STAAD.PRO is much more efficient software.

CHAPTER-5 – METHODOLOGY
5.1 GENERAL
In this project, the region for proposed structure and dimensions were fixed for carrying out the experiment and for preparin g the model in the
Staad pro and Etabs software. By using this model analysis and design the different component of structure and calculate the different
parameters.
A 20 m x 20m x 78 m height multi storey building structure is considered for this project study.
Modeling, analysis and design of the 78 m high R.C.C. structure is being done one by one, on both STAAD.PRO and ETABS software.

5.2 LOADING
Various types of loads act on the structure such as Live Load (LL), Dead load (DL), Seismic load (EL) and Wind load (WL).
1.Dead load = Dead load is defined as the load on the structure due to its own or self-weight. It is included the loads of such member which
stands permanent on the structure. During the analysis of this project model considering the dead load is weight of beam and slab.
2.Live Load = Live load is also known as imposed load, this type of load on a structure due to temporary member, moving on people. It is
generally depending upon the type and use of structure such as residential, industrial, institutional etc.
3.Wind load = Wind load is type of load act on a very high height building due to the wind intensities. Wind intensities varies from time to
time but IS code 875 referred the wind intensities according to place or city. The value taken from IS code for particular ci ty is the maximum
wind intensities. The maximum intensity of wind load is taken to avoiding the tremendous effect on the structure.
4.Seismic load = Seismic load is also known as Earthquake load which is occurred due to earthquake. This load is undertaken as per Zone
mention in the IS code 1893. There are Four seismic Zones in India defined as, Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V.
5.3 CALCULATIONS OF LOADS
1.The Self weight of the structure is taken as Dead load comprising the weight of the various structural components such as slab, beam and
column.
2.The Live load is taken as the weight of movable members, concentrated load, load due to impact load and vibrations. As per IS 875 the
3.Seismic load is taken as per zone specified in the IS code 875. In this project we consider the place of building in Delhi which is fall under
4.Wind load is depending upon the wind speed in particular location, in this study consider location is Delhi and where wind speed is 47
m/s.
In this project the structure is analyzed for different load combinations, combinations of dead load, live load, seismic l oad and wind load as

5.5 REQUIRED SOFTWARE FOR STUDY
1. STAAD.PRO – STAAD.PRO is a powerful and famous analysis and design software produced by Bentley Inc. It is suitable for the design
and analysis of different Type of material and structure which is stable under different loading condition. First make the outline of the
structure where the analysis is to be done and apply various type of loads that will act on the structure members like beams, columns as well
as provide the size, shape and obtain shear force and bending moment values from the analysis stage. In design stage, designing the type of
materials, quantity of required material and also check the member dimension to resist the required loads.
To calculate SFD and BMD of a structural member theoretically is very complex when various loads act on beam it takes about one hour or
more. So when design the various member of a building structure takes approximately 1 week or more. But STAAD.PRO is very powerful
software which takes only 1 – 2 hours to design all the members of a multi-storey building structure.
Majority of the high rise buildings, complex structures, towers, truss structures are designed by using STAAD.PRO software. It makes the
This software is useful for the analysis and design of R.C.C. structure, Steel Trusses etc according to the various country codes. STAAD.PRO
can be used to generate with ease diagrams like bending moment diagram (BMD), shear force diagram (SFD), etc of individual member or of
the full structure, deflections in all the degrees of freedom of the nodes, and support reactions.
ETABS- ETABS is also modern software for 3-D analysis of Building and design Systems. ETABS was used to create the mathematical
model of the iconic building of Burj Khalifa in Dubai which it the tallest building in the world. It was designed by Chicago Illinois-based
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP (SOM). ETABS is generally used to analyze the high rise buildings, truss structures, steel and concrete
structures, Skyscrapers, low rise buildings and portal frame structures. This software is majorly used for designing the building type structures,
the input, output and numerical solution techniques of ETABS are specifically designed to take the advantage of the unique physical and
numerical characteristics associated with building type structures. It is a complete package of Windows graphical tools and utilities are including
a modeller and a postprocessor for viewing all results, including force diagrams and deflected shapes. It is best suited to view the Shear force
ETABS provides both static and dynamic analysis for wide range of gravity, thermal and lateral loads. Dynamic analysis may include a seismic
response spectrum or accelerogram time history. ETABS can analyse any combination of Three Dimensional frame and shear wall system, and
provides complete interaction between the two. The shear wall element is specially formulated for ETABS and is very effective for modelling
the elevator core walls, curved walls and discontinuous walls. This wall element requires no mesh definition and the output is produced is in the
form of wall forces and moments, rather than stresses. A wide range of gravity, thermal and loads may be applied for analysis. Steel Frame,
Concrete Frame and Concrete/Masonry Shear wall design can be possible with various different codes. Outputs data easily access for each level
of structure like displacement, forces diagram, and time period for different type of frame R.C.C. frame as well as Steel frame structure.
Special features that are available on ETABS are design of various shapes of Columns such as T- Column, L - Column, and Poly shaped column.
The design of Beams with varying depths, shear walls with or without openings according to various Indian Standard Code can be provided in
ETABS software.
Step - 1: First create and join the node points according to the column positioning in plan/drawing.
Step - 2: Generate the required number of beams and columns as per drawing by using add beam command. By using this command draw the
Step - 3: By using transitional repeat command generate the structure more story in Y direction to provide the full 3D structure.
Step - 4: Assign the properties of members and support to the structure. After creating the full structure, the supports are provided as fixed. The
dimensions of beam and columns are also specified and are assigned to the members.
Step - 5: Generate 3D rendering view which shows the solid frame structure. Also we can see the connection to the column and beams.
Step - 6: In continuation start assigning the load, seismic load is first assigned. The seismic load is assigned according to the IS 1893: 2002 with
proper floor weights. Loads are added in load case details in +X,-X, +Z,-Z directions with specified seismic factor.
Step - 7: The wind loads are assigned. Wind loads are defined as per IS 875 PART 3 based on wind intensity of location where structure is
constructed and exposure factor. This loads are also added in directions of +X,-X, +Z,-Z.
Step - 8: Further assign the Dead load, in this consider the self-weight of beam column and slab as per IS 875 PART 1.
Step - 9: Assign the Live load as per IS 875 part 2 codes taken value 3.5 kN/m2.
Step -11: After assigning the all load adding the different load combinations condition. The load combinations are given as per IS code 456 after
Step - 12: Perform the analysis of the Structure. After completion of the above mention steps, check for error in the model is carried out.
Step – 13: After checking the model has no error, Design of concrete is started. Concrete design is performed as per IS 456: 2000 by defining
suitable design commands for various member of structure. After the assign of commands and various option required in report again start for
analysis.
