Courtyard
In hot and humid countries like India, the role of the double-skin
façade in responding to the climatic context and regulating
temperature is becoming increasingly crucial.

For the Girls’ Hostel Block at the St. Andrews Institute of

Technology and Management, the first skin has been designed as a
semi-permeable layer that comprises a twisted hollow concrete
block screen. The second skin takes on the role of a breakout
space such as a corridor or court and connects the interiors to the
exteriors
 Natural ventilation, maximized daylight using skylights, thermally
insulated roofs, eco-friendly surrounding gives an environment like home
to the students which enhances easy learning due to the nature friendly
schooling.
 The Solar Passive Architecture gives a greater advantage to the building by
using natural light to its maximum efficiency.
 The sun, shade, shadow, rain, breeze, trees, fruits, flowers, fragrances, birds
and now pets set forth a pleasant interactive ambience for ‘a complete
learning' experience of the student.
 Has salt in soil due to which doing construction is difficult.
 Reuse and recycling of material
 Circular economy
 Integrated design
 Need for continuous updating of professionals
 Challenges. create a secure hub for the girlsa
campus within a campus fitting into the urban
master plan that did not restrict the movement
while establishing a connection with the outdoors

C
Material

 Materiality and Architectural Details. The

building’s materialization in concrete and
brickwork binds the different floors together.
 The columns are round in shape to enhance
visual appearance as well as physicality.
 The pergola on the roof is designed using cement
board and steel beams to achieve lightweight
construction and optimum design quality.
Conclusion

In conclusion, St. Andrews Girls’ Hostel is a prime example

of traditional architecture that is climate and context-
responsive as well as one that learns from its precedents.
Zero Energy Design Lab strived to reduce energy
consumption using passive design techniques and created a
building that is a four-way congruence of sustainability,
aesthetics, functionality, and user comfort.
