Mobile Generations

1G refers to the first 2G technology 3G technology 4G technology 5G technology

generation of wireless refers to the refer to third refer to or short refer to short
telephone technology, 2nd generation generation name of fourth name of fifth
mobile which is based which was Generation Generation

introduced in 1980s and late 2000s. late 2010s.
completed in early
1990s.
1G- First Generation

1G refers to the first generation of wireless telephone technology, mobile

telecommunications which was first introduced in 1980s and completed in
early 1990s.

• It’s speed was up to 2.4kbps.

• It allows the voice calls in 1 country.
• 1G network use Analog Signal.
• AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) was first launched in USA in 1G
mobile systems.
1G- Disadvantages

• Poor Voice Quality

• Poor Battery Life
• Large Phone Size
• No Security
• Limited Capacity
• Poor Reliability
2G- Second Generation

• 2G technology refers to the 2nd generation which is based on GSM.

• It was launched in Finland in the year 1991.
• 2G network use digital signals.
• It’s data speed was up to 64kbps.
2G- Features Includes

• It enables services such as text messages, picture messages and MMS

(multi media message).
• It provides better quality and capacity .
• Send/Receive E-mail Massages
• Web Browsing
• Speed:64-144 kbps
• Camera Phones
• Take a time of 6-9 mins to download a 3 mins Mp3.
2G- Disadvantages

• 2G requires strong digital signals to help mobile phones work. If there is

no network coverage in any specific area , digital signals would weak.
• These systems are unable to handle complex data such as Videos.
1G & 2G- Wireless Models

1G WIRELESS SYSTEMS 2G WIRELESS SYSTEMS

3G- Third Generation

• Is the third generation of wireless technologies. It comes with

enhancements over previous wireless technologies, like high-speed
transmission, advanced multimedia access, and global roaming.

• Third generation technology came in 2001, but did not gain widespread
use until the year 2007.
3G- Technology Features

Comparing 3G technology with previous technologies, they are characterized

by the following :
• 3G technology is much faster data transfer than previous techniques.
• Best quality in live audio and videos.
• The ability to watch tv. channels online.
• The ability to browse the Internet at high speeds.
3G- Data Transfer Speed

• Data transfer speed is between 384 Kbps and 2 Mbps.

• It is between 385 Kbps and 1 Mbps if the connected device moves quickly,
in case the device was moving slowly maximum speed, and up to 2Mbps.
3G- Features

• Providing Faster Communication

• Send/Receive Large Email Messages
• High Speed Web / More Security
• Video Conferencing / 3D Gaming
• TV Streaming/ Mobile TV/ Phone Calls
• Large Capacities and Broadband Capabilities
• 11 sec – 1.5 min. time to download a 3 min Mp3.
3G- Drawbacks

• Expensive fees for 3G Licenses Services

• It was challenge to build the infrastructure for 3G
• High Bandwidth Requirement
• Expensive 3G Phones.
• Large Cell Phones
4G- Fourth Generation

• 4G is the fourth generation of wireless technology, have been made

available for the first time by Sprint Corporation (Sprint) America at the
beginning of 2009.
• 4G are faster than 3G up to 10 times (20 – 100 Mbps), and the need for
more rapid technology due to the evolution of phones and tablets and their
need for quick connection technology, these devices can broadcast live
video and audio clips.
• The 4G technology is not available for all devices, which require that the
device supports the ability to Exchange data at 100Mbps and more.
4G- Fourth Generation

• Telecommunications companies can provide fourth generation service

through LTE (Long Term Evolution) , or through WiMAX (Worldwide
Interoperability for Microwave Access), but in both techniques, using OFDM
technology for data packets and send them.
The fourth generation technology also includes a set of other standards and
technologies, including the following :
1. CDMA2000 EV-DO technology.
2. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO).
3. OFDMA technology.
4G- Data Transfer Speed

• Data transfer speed in 4G technology differs from one company to another,

loading data in general faster than uploading data in most companies.
• download speed up to 12 Mbps on (Verizon), which use LTE service and
uploading speed up to 5 Mbps.
• In the Sprint Corporation which uses WiMax technology, download speed
up to 10 Mbps and upload speeds of 1 Mbps.
4G- Versions

• WiMAX , LTE , and HSPA+ are all versions of 4G , WiMAX is used by Sprint ,
LTE is used by Verizon and AT&T, HSPA+ is used by AT&T and Tmobile.
4G- Advantages

• Support of many broadband services as possibility of live broadcast , plus

support for interactive multimedia ,Internet, etc.
• High speed.
• Supports all known network technologies like Bluetooth, WCDMA, etc.
• Provide many services that based on the principle of quality of service .
• Provides mobility.
• It is more flexible and It is more reliable.
• You can easily access Internet , Social Networks , streaming media , video
calling and the other broadband services.
• It is very stable when connected to the Internet without any disruption it
doesn’t throttle .
4G- Drawbacks

• Battery uses is more

• Hard to implement
• Need complicated hardware
• Expensive equipment required to implement next generation network
3G & 4G- Simple Comparison

Technology 3G 4G

Data transfer Rate 3.1MB/sec 100MB/sec

Internet Services Broadband Ultra Broadband
Mobile - TV Resolution Low High
Bandwidth 5 – 20 MHz 100 MHz
Frequency 1.6 – 2GHz 2 - 8 GHz
Download and Upload 5.8 Mbps 14 Mbps
5G- Fifth Generation

• 5G technology refer to short name of fifth

Generation which was started from late 2010s.
• Complete wireless communication with almost
no limitations.
• It is highly supportable to WWWW (Wireless
World Wide Web).
5G- Benefits

• High Speed, High Capacity 5G technology providing large

broadcasting of data in Gbps .
• Multi - Media Newspapers, watch T.V programs with the
clarity as to that of an HD Quality.
• Faster data transmission that of the previous
generations.
• Large Phone Memory, Dialing Speed, clarity in
Audio/Video.
• Support interactive multimedia , voice, streaming video,
Internet and other
• 5G is More Effective and More Attractive
