Linear Equation

The document discusses linear equations and how to rewrite them in slope-intercept and standard form. It provides examples of rewriting various linear equations between the two forms and emphasizes using the addition and multiplication properties of equality. It also gives a practice problem to rewrite 5 linear equations in one of the two forms.

MATHEMATICS 8 CLASS
Writes linear equation Ax
+ By=C In the form y=mx+
b and vice versa
LINEAR
EQUATION
Equation in which the
highest degree of the
variable is always 1.
STANDARD
FORMform:
Linear Equation in the

Ax+ By=C
Where A,B and C are
real numbers
SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM
Linear Equation in the
form:
y = mx + b
Where “m” is the slope and
“b” is the y-intercept
How do we rewrite the equation
3x-5y=10 in the form y=mx+b?
determine it’s slope and y-
intercept.
SOLUTIONS:
3x-5y=10 Given
3x-5y+(-3x)=10+(-3x) Addition
Property of Equality
-5y=-3x+10 Simplification
=- Multiplication Property of Equality
y= x – 2 Simplification
How do we rewrite the equation in
the form Ax + By= C ?
SOLUTIONS
y= Given
2(y)=2 ( ) Multiplication Property
of Equality
2y=-x+6 Simplification
2y+(-x)=-x+6+(-x ) Addition Property
of Equality
-x+2y = 6 Simplification
(-1)(-x+2y)=(-1)(6) Multiplication

x-2y=-6 Simplification
PRACTICE
TASK
Rewrite the following linear equations
either in the form
𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 or 𝑨𝒙 + 𝑩𝒚 = 𝑪.
1. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 9
2. 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4
3. 𝑦=−𝑥+4
4. 𝑦=−2𝑥+6
5. 𝑦=5𝑥+7
1.2x+y=9
solutions:
2x+y=9 Given
2x+y+(-2x)=9+(-2x) APE
Y= -2x+9
Simplification
2. x+2y=4
solutions:
x+2y=4 Given
x+2y+(-x)=4+(-x) APE
2y= -x+4
Simplification

Y=-
3. y=-x+4
solutions:
y=-x+4
Given
y+(x)=-x+4 +(x) APE
x+y= 4
Simplification
4. y=-2x+6
solutions:
y=-2x+6
Given
y+(2x)=-2x+6+(2x) APE
2x+y= 6
Simplification
5. y=5x+7
solutions:
y=5x+7 Given
y+(-5x)=5x+7+(-5x) APE
-5x+y= 7
Simplification
(-1)(-5x+y)=7(-1)
MPE
5x-y=-7
Simplification
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
1.Standard form is Ax +By=C
2.Slope Intercept form is y=mx+ b
3.In rewriting linear equation into Standard form and
Slope Intercept form or vice versa we must keep in
mind the Addition Property of Equality (APE) and
the Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE)
Rewrite the following linear equations in
the form
Y=mx + b or in the form Ax + By=C
1. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 7
2. 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 5
3. 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 12
4. 𝑦 = 3𝑥– 4
5. 𝑦 = 3/ 4 𝑥 + 3
