What is straightness?
• It is a condition where all the points of an element lie
on a straight line.
Importance:
• The basis of most of the measurements is either a
straight line or a plane.
• Straightness is considered as a reference.

Auto-Collimator:
-It is an optical instrument that is used to measure small angles with very high sensitivity.
-Provides non-contact measurement.

Conversion of angular deviation into linear deviation:

Experimental Setup:
Cumulative and Actual Errors Graphs
Procedure (For Straightness):
• Keep a mirror on the straight line from the path of light
rays.
• Move the distance by a distance of 10cm.
• The reflecting mirror should be moved forward with a
distance say 1cm.
• Now, the green and black coloured lines must coincide.
•Adjust the dial to make them coincide. You get the angular
deviation reading from this.
• Now ,convert this into linear deviation.
• Repeat the process at different locations on the straight line.
Procedure (For Flatness):
• Two mirrors are needed to measure flatness.
• Rotate the mirror which is present on the straight
line and make the othe mirror parallel to this mirror.
• Adopt similar procedure from the previous slide to
measure the linear deviation.
• Repeat the procedure by keeping the first mirror
at different angles from the straight line.
