Math Section B Project

This document provides an introduction to coordinate geometry in 3 dimensions. It includes 3 key sections: an introduction to 3D coordinate geometry involving x, y, and z coordinates; important formulas for distance, section, and midpoint; and direction cosines and ratios involving angles between lines and the x, y, and z axes. It also briefly compares 2D and 3D shapes, acknowledging the author's teachers and parents, and listing references used.

Introduction to Co-ordinate Geometry (3D)

3D geometry involves the mathematics of shapes in 3D space and

involving 3 coordinates which are x-coordinate, y-coordinate and z-
coordinate. In a 3d space, three parameters are required to find the exact
location of a point.
In 3 dimensional geometry, a coordinate system refers to the process of
identifying the position or location of a point in the coordinate plane.

Direction Cosines and Ratios

Direction Cosines: When a directed line OP passing through the

origin makes α, β and γ angles with the x, y and z axis
respectively with O as the reference, these angles are referred as
the direction angles of the line and the cosine of these angles
give us the direction cosines. These direction cosines are usually
represented as l, m and n.
Direction Ratio: Any numbers that are proportional to the
direction cosines are called direction ratios, usually represented
as a, b, c. Note that the sum of squares of the direction cosines
of a line is equal to unity.
A ∝ l , b ∝ m and c ∝ n
1 = (x2 + y2 + z2)/ r2 = l2 + m2 + n2
2D vs 3D
Difference between 2D Shape and 3D Geometric Shape.
The following are the differences between a 2D and a 3D
form:3D shapes have length, breadth, and height, but 2D
shapes only have length and width. Two-dimensional
shapes have an area but no volume, whereas three-
dimensional shapes have both a surface area and a
volume. Square, triangle, and rectangle are examples of 2D
shapes, whereas cube, cuboid, and prism are examples of
3D shapes.
