Manipulation of Amalgam

This document discusses various techniques for manipulating dental amalgam, including proportioning and dispensing the correct alloy to mercury ratio, mixing through trituration, packing the amalgam into the cavity using various tools, carving away excess material, and polishing the final restoration for optimal aesthetics and corrosion resistance. Key steps include triturating for 40 seconds by hand or less time using a mechanical amalgamator, condensing the amalgam with incremental layers, carving after the material has set, and performing coarse and fine polishing after 24 hours.

Manipulation of Amalgam

Manipulative Variables

• Proportioning and dispensing

• Trituration
• Condensation
• Carving
• Polishing
Proportioning and Dispensing

• Alloy / Mercury ratio : 5:8 and 10 : 8

• Spherical particle alloys require less mercury to produce a workable mix.
• If too much mercury  more gamma 2 phase. Weak
• If too less mercury dry, grainy mix  rough , pitted surface more prone
to corrosion.
Various methods of dispensation

• Volume dispensers
• Pre- proportioned sachet/ envelope/ tablet
• Semi- automatic dispensers
• Encapsulated materials
Trituration

• Mixing
• Hand  Mortar and pestle  40 seconds guaze sqeeze to express
excess mercury
• Mechanical  Amalgamator  5-20 seconds
Advantages of mechanical trituration

• A uniform and reproducible mix is produced

• A shorter trituration time
• A greater Alloy/ mercury ratio can be used
Condensation

• Packing
• Amalgam gun
• Hand condenser  amalgam condenser quite high loads
• Ultrasonic condenser  local heating
Condensation must ensure the following

• Adequate adaptation to the cavity walls and base

• Good bonding between incremental layers of amalgam
• Minimizing porosity
Carving

• Objective is to :
• Remove mercury rich layer
• Rebuild anatomy of the tooth
• Re-establish contact with the opposing dentition
• If carving done too soon ’ dragging out ‘of material
• If Carving delayed too long  Chipping at the margins
Removing high spots

• When Amalgam is still soft  Rub the surface with cotton wool produces
matt finish  patient is asked to tap the teeth or move from side to side 
high spot will show as bright burnished spot.
• If Amalgam is set  Articulating tape  steel bur in a slow hand piece.
Polishing

• To achieve lustrous surface

• More acceptable appearance
• Better corrosion resistance
• After 24 hrs
Coarse polishing

• Multi – bladed steel bur in slow hand piece

Fine polishing

• Abrasives e.g
• Flours of pumice
• Ceric oxide with water
• Abrasive impregnated rubber points and wheels. ( care required)
• Amalgam can be heated significantly due to friction between rubber points and
amalgam.
• Should be used with intermittent contact pressure rather than continuous load.
