Uniqueness of The Earth

The document discusses factors that make Earth uniquely habitable, including its atmosphere, temperature regulation, presence of liquid water and oxygen, and synchronized rotation and revolution. It also contains lessons and activities comparing Earth to Venus and Mars, noting differences in their atmospheric compositions, orbital periods, rotational speeds, and presence of liquid water that make Earth hospitable for life. Students are tasked to consider what factors make a planet habitable and choose one to crash land on.

LIFE
1. What particular planet in the
universe that sustains life?
2. Why is Earth the only “Habitable
Planet” among the planets in the
universe?
The Uniqueness
of the Earth
Lesson 1: The Characteristics of Earth
 Recognize the uniqueness of Earth, being the
only planet in the solar system with properties
necessary to support life.

Lesson 2: The Four Subsystems of Earth

 Explain that the Earth consists of four
subsystems, across whose boundaries matter and
energy flow.
How will
you describe
the Earth?
Earth is also often called as the “Blue Marble”
because of it looks like a blue globe encircled by
swirling white clouds as seen from the outer
space.
 As of today, Earth is the only planet in the Solar
System that is habitable or where living things
can exist although scientists are now looking at
exoplanets that are potentially habitable.
• Earth is a unique planet. It is the only planet capable
of sustaining life because of the right combination of
elements, molecules, and ions that react under the
right physical conditions to make up the processes
supportive to life.
• It has an atmosphere that serves as a thermostat that is
necessary to regulate its surface temperature. It also
contains the right amount of liquid water and oxygen
that serve as essential compounds needed in biological
processes such as cellular respiration and
photosynthesis.
Earth’s scientists describe this planet as a
life support system. It is in the perfect
location in the solar system.
The mechanism of its rotation and
revolution are well-synchronized to bring
about changes in the weather and climate.
Its tilt relative to the orbital plane promotes
seasons as we know it.
Activity 1: Compare and Contrast
VENUS EARTH
MARS
Directions:
Here’s our neighbor planets: Venus and
Mars. On this activity, you should
compare and contrast the physical and
chemical properties of these planets
using the provided factsheet as your
guide.
Guide Questions:
1. In what properties does Earth is almost similar
to Venus? Mars? both planets?
2. What are the notable differences between Earth
and Venus? Earth and Mars?
3. Based on the fact sheet above, what do you
think are the physical properties of Earth makes it
unique and habitable compared to Venus and
Mars?
1. Venus, Earth, and Mars have composition and densities
that are not too different from each other.
2. Majority of the gas in the atmosphere of Venus and Mars
is carbon dioxide while on Earth is nitrogen.
3. Orbital period and velocity are related to the planet's
distance from the sun. Among the three planets, Venus is the
nearest and Mars is the farthest from the Sun.
4. Rotational speed of Earth and Mars are very similar.
Rotational speed of Venus is extremely slow.
5. Abundance of liquid water on Earth, hence the blue color.
The Earth is a habitable planet.
Question:

What are the factors that will

make a certain planet a
habitable one?
Factors that
make a Planet
Habitable
Activity
Task:
Write down on a your activity notebook
your choice of planet or moon. Reasons
for your choice should also be written
down. Reasons why you did not choose
the other planets should also be
included.
Questions:
1) What planet will you choose to crash-land?
_______________________________________________________
2) Why did you choose this planet?
_______________________________________________________
3) What is the difference of the planet you chose compared to Earth?
