Public education is essential for effective solid waste management. Raising awareness of a city's waste management activities and the benefits of proper management can increase use of waste collection services, funding for management from officials, adoption of waste policies, and public participation in programs. This helps waste segregation and reduction at the source. Innovative solutions like smart waste bins, sensors, recycling robots, pneumatic waste pipes, and solar compactors can help optimize collection and reduce environmental impacts. However, challenges remain like lack of segregation, incorrect techniques, slow adoption of composting, and lack of monitoring in housing societies.

Importance of public education on solid waste

management
• Raising awareness about municipal solid waste management is an
essential component of effective waste management. It is important
for key stakeholders to be aware of a city’s waste management
activities and have a strong understanding of the benefits of proper
solid waste management.
• Raising awareness about a city’s municipal solid waste management
activities and the benefits of proper solid waste management can
result in increases in:

a. Use of city waste collection services by the public and private

sectors.
b. Funding for waste management from local elected officials.
c. Adoption and enforcement of local waste management policies.
d. Support for local-level activities from national or provincial
governments.
e. Public participation in awareness programs which results in
segregation at point source and reduction of waste.
Innovative solutions for solid waste management
• Smart waste bins: this smart waste container is able to identify, sort,
and compress solid wastes into manageable loads using artificial
intelligence and sensors, making it nothing short of self-sorting trash
cans.
• Waste level sensor: it can be placed in trash cans and dumpsters, and
they help to monitor how full they are. This information can then be
used to optimize pick-up schedules and routes of garbage trucks,
ensuring that the waste is collected before it has a chance to build up.
• AI recycling robots: AI recycling robots are designed to sort through
waste and identify recyclable materials, producing high-defined waste
streams. Once the materials have been sorted, the robot can then
provide information on how to recycle them properly for a better waste
management experience.
• Pneumatic waste pipes: they are one of the most innovative smart
waste management technologies contributing to pneumatic waste
collection. By using high-pressure air to move waste through a system
of underground pipes. They can efficiently and effectively transport
large volumes of waste with minimal environmental impact.
• Solar-powered trash compactors: these compactors are designed to
reduce the volume of trash by up to 90%, making them an ideal
solution for busy urban areas. In addition, they are powered by solar
panels, which helps to offset the pollution caused by traditional trash
compactors.
Challenges in solid waste management
Here are few challenges of solid waste management below:-
Challenge 1: No segregation at source:-
Government in unable to segregate and process 100% of the collected waste.
Segregation is done under unsafe and hazardous conditions, posing health
hazards and injuries to waste collectors . Mixed waste is dumped in landfills. Due
to lack of infrastructure and poor enforcement of laws, waste piles up on the
streets, in vacant sites and drains.
Challenge 2: Incorrect/Inadequate segregating technique:-
1.Source segregation without source reduction
Residents simply segregate without minimizing the amount of waste generated.
2. Hazardous waste is not sealed and labeled
Waste passes through multiple hands before final disposal. If domestic hazardous
waste (diapers, sanitary napkins, glass shards, chemicals , etc.) is not labelled it
ends up causing illness and injuries to waste collectors.
3. Excessive use of garbage liners/bags
Dry and wet waste are separated in two garbage bags, doubling the volume of
plastic waste.
4. Incorrect disposal of e-waste
Waste such as tube lights are carelessly disposed of, often mixed with other kinds
of waste. Broken tube lights are a major source of mercury poisoning.
Challenge 3: Slow adoption of in-house composition:-
Three major obstacles stand in the way of individual/community
composting:
• The misconception that composting is smelly and attracts maggots
and flies
• Lack of interest and low enthusiasm
• Budgetary constraints
Challenge 4: Lack of monitoring in house societies:-
• Appoint housekeeping teams to accompany waste collectors on
random days of the week to ensure that every household is
segregating waste as per rules. The findings/defaulters can be
reported to the MC for further action
• Composting societies can also appoint volunteers, guards and
housekeeping staff to make sure that no wet waste is being thrown
into municipal waste in the absence of information and
supervision.
• Repeat offenders must be given official warning and if non-
compliance persists, they should be fined according to internal
policies set by the MC/RWA.
