Characteristics
of
Modern Art
Response to Surroundings
- This type of art commonly shows postmodern
buildings in contrast to modern ones. Post-
modern art that shows these buildings usually
reflects the history of the landscape and its
shape.
Expansive
- is a characteristic that makes art look like
it expands beyond the canvas. It is as if it is
a window, and you can see further than what
is right in front of you.
Symbolism
-can be found in any style, theme, or genre
of art. Symbolism shows meaning in
either the whole painting, a portion, there
can be multiple meanings in one piece of
art.
Iconography
-is used in every art style. Iconography
is what was portrayed in the work of
art as subject(s), scenery, elements,
and/or details.
It Had Real Value
-The artist’s self-worth of their artwork is “True Value”.
Before modern art in the past, artists believed that art had
meaning. Perhaps everything had been worthwhile. This was
popular during the pre-modern age periods since art then
literally revolved around religions. They have followed the
‘rules’. Modern artists painted what they wanted, which
made them happy.
MODERN
ART
Famous art
movement that
evolved in the
process of years.
Impressionism
 originated among a group of Paris-based
artists in the second half of the 19th century.
 from 1872 to the mid-1880s being less than 20
years
 It was not supposed to be transparent or
factual but more like a flickering glimpse of
truth captured on canvas.
Famous
Artists
Edouard Manet (1832-1883)
had been one of the first artists of the 19th
century to represent the subjects of everyday
life. He was a central figure in the transition
from realism to impressionism, recognizing a lot
of his works as marking the birth of
contemporary art.

(1882)
Claude Monet
(1840-1926)
He'd been the group's most famous
painter. Monet is best known for his
paintings on the landscapes,
particularly those depicting his flower
gardens.

Water Lilies (1899) (1900)
Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
Renoir was one of the key figures of the
Impressionist movement along with Claude
Monet. His early works were real-life snapshots,
full of light and dazzling color. By the mid-1880s
Renoir broke away from the impressionist trend to
adopt a more controlled technique.

Expressionism
Another group of artists who became popular in the
1900’s are the expressionists. They created works
with more emotional force, and not on realistic or
natural images. To attain this, they used distorted
outlines, unrealistic or unnatural images. Their works
are not actually what they see in the physical world
but depend on their imaginations and feelings.
Expressionism
The different styles that emerged within the
expressionist art movements are:
▪ Neo primitivism
▪ Fauvism
▪ Dadaism
▪ Surrealism
▪ Social Realism
NEOPRIMITIVIS
M art style of combined
Neoprimitivism is an
elements from the native arts of the South Sea
Islanders and the wood carvings of African
tribes. Among the Western artists who adapted
these elements was Amedeo Modigliani. Oval
faces and elongated shapes of African art can be
seen in both his sculptures and paintings.

DADAISM
Dadaism is a style characterized by imagination,

and Giorgio de Chirico. These artists turn their
backs from using traditional styles in arts leading
to their new style called “non-style.”

Surrealism

subconscious dream world. It is a clear
expression of departure from reality - as if the
artists were dreaming, seeing illusions, or
experiencing a change in mental state.

Abstractionism
In the 20th century, the abstractionist movement existed
from various intellectual points of view.
Geometrical shapes, patterns, lines, angles, textures, and
swirls of color were used. Representational abstractionism
depicts still-recognizable subjects while pure abstractionism
does not recognize any subject at all
Cubism
The cubist style was derived from the
word cube, a three-dimensional
geometric figure composed of lines,
planes, and angles. Pablo Picasso -

Futurism
Futurism is a style of art that began in Italy
in the early 1900’s. It is an art of fast-paced,
machine-propelled age. Artists draw
inspiration through motion, force, speed and
strength of mechanical forms. Thus, their
works depicted the dynamic sensation of all
these – as seen in the works of Italian painter
Gino Severini

Gino Severini, 1915
Mechanical Style

In mechanical style of art, basic forms

such as planes, cones, spheres, and
cylinders all fit together in a precise and
neat manner.

Non-Objectivism
From the term non-object, works
in non-objectivism style did not
make use of figures or even
representations of figures.
