Convergent Plate Boundary

1. Convergent plate boundaries occur where tectonic plates move toward each other and include oceanic-oceanic, oceanic-continental, and continental-continental collision zones. 2. Oceanic-oceanic collision results in volcanic island arcs and trenches, while oceanic-continental collision forms continental volcanic arcs and trenches. 3. Continental-continental collision causes mountain building and earthquakes.

Convergent Plate

Boundary
Objectives
1. Identify and describe the different processes that
occur along the plate boundaries.
2. Explain what happens when oceanic and
continental lithosphere collide and identify the
landforms associated with it.
Objectives
3. Explain what happens when two oceanic lithosphere
collide and identify the landforms associated with it.
4. Explain what happens when two continental
lithosphere collide and identify the landforms
associated with it.
Recall
The Earth’s Lithosphere is divided into several segments called plates.
Recall
What are the
difference between
Oceanic and
Continental
lithosphere?
Recall
The plates move at
an average of how
many centimeters
per year?
Recall
What are the
different types of
plate boundary?
Convergent Plate Boundary
✔ The type of boundary in which two
plates move toward each other
✔Destructive boundary
✔ Where mountains and volcanoes are formed
✔ Where earthquakes occur
Three Types
1. Oceanic-Oceanic
2. Oceanic-Continental
3. Continental-Continental

Objectives
1. Identify and describe the different processes that
occur along the plate boundaries.
2. Explain the process that occur along divergent
boundaries and identify landforms associated with
it.
Objectives
3. Explain the processes that occur along transform
fault boundaries and identify the landforms associated
with it.
Divergent
✔Where plates are moving apart
✔Constructive boundary
✔Associated with underwater volcanoes,
formation of new crust and occurrence of
earthquakes.
Divergent
✔ Most divergent plate boundaries are situated
along underwater mountain ranges called oceanic
ridges.
✔When a spreading center develops within a
continent, the crust may break into several
segments. The breaking leads to the formation of
downfaulted valleys called rift valley.
Transform
✔Plates grind past each other without creating or
destroying the lithosphere.
✔Conservative margin
✔Shallow earthquakes
✔Most transform fault joins two segments of a mid-
ocean ridge. The presence of a ridge is an indication of
diverging plates, and as the plates diverge between the
two segments of the mid – ocean ridge, the adjacent
slabs of crust are grinding past each other.
