So, what is statistics?
• Deals with data
• Branch of mathematics
• Data collection, analysis,

THE 3 M’S –
MEAN, MEDIAN AND MODE
MEAN
Ahmed has a money bank in which he deposits his
pocket money every week. In the month of
February, he puts in AED 5,10,7,18 every week.
What is his average weekly deposit for that month?

ANSWER: AED 10
TYPES OF MEAN:
- Direct Mean Method
- Assumed Mean Method
- Step Deviation Method
DIRECT MEAN
The heights of children in D-11-1 Maths batch are 139, 141, 141,
141, 159, 128, 137, 137, 140, 150 cm. Calculate the mean height
of this class.
xi fi fixi
139 1 139
141 3 423
=1413
159 1 159
128 1 128
137 2 274
140 1 140
=1413/10=141.3
150 1 150

DEVIATION:
WHICH
METHOD?
Median
• When the number of observations (n) is odd, the median is
the value of the ((n+1)/2) th observation.
• When the number of observations (n) is even, the median
is the mean of (n/2) & (n/2 + 1) th observations.
EXAMPLE:
Data – 2,4,6,8,10. Here n=5
Median is the 3rd term 6 because (n+1)/2=3rd
term
EXAMPLE:
Data – 2,4,6,8. Here n=4
Median is the mean of 2nd and 3rd term because
n/2 and n/2+1 terms are 2nd and 3rd terms.
Hence, median = (4+6)/2=5
