Statistics Presentation by Aamna

This document provides an overview of statistics concepts including mean, median, mode, and dispersion. It discusses calculating the mean, median, and mode for data sets. Central tendency measures how data clusters around a central point while dispersion describes how spread out the data is. Methods for calculating mean deviation are presented for ungrouped and grouped data, including discrete and continuous frequency distributions. Readers are directed to exercises at the end to solve problems related to these statistical concepts.

So, what is statistics?
• Deals with data
• Branch of mathematics
• Data collection, analysis,

MEAN, MEDIAN AND MODE
MEAN
Ahmed has a money bank in which he deposits his
pocket money every week. In the month of
February, he puts in AED 5,10,7,18 every week.
What is his average weekly deposit for that month?

ANSWER: AED 10

TYPES OF MEAN:
- Direct Mean Method
- Assumed Mean Method
- Step Deviation Method
DIRECT MEAN
The heights of children in D-11-1 Maths batch are 139, 141, 141,
141, 159, 128, 137, 137, 140, 150 cm. Calculate the mean height
of this class.

139 1 139

141 3 423
=1413
159 1 159

128 1 128

137 2 274

140 1 140

DEVIATION:
WHICH
METHOD?
Median
• When the number of observations (n) is odd, the median is
the value of the ((n+1)/2) th observation.
• When the number of observations (n) is even, the median
is the mean of (n/2) & (n/2 + 1) th observations.

EXAMPLE:
Data – 2,4,6,8,10. Here n=5
Median is the 3rd term 6 because (n+1)/2=3rd
term

EXAMPLE:
Data – 2,4,6,8. Here n=4
Median is the mean of 2nd and 3rd term because
n/2 and n/2+1 terms are 2nd and 3rd terms.
Hence, median = (4+6)/2=5

What we are going to learn in this chapter:

TYPES OF DISPERSION:

CENTRAL
1. Range

2. Quartile Deviation (not in syllabus)

3. Mean Deviation

TENDENC
- Mean Deviation for Ungrouped data

- Mean Deviation for Grouped data

• Mean Deviation for Discrete frequency distribution

• Mean Deviation for Continuous frequency distribution

4. Standard Deviation (covered next)

RANGE
RANGE Range of first table >>
range of second table

That means data of first table

is much, more scattered than
2nd one.

And in 2nd one, data is nearby

or around a central point and
in this case its 32.
QUARTILE DEVIATION
a. Median – divides the distribution
into 2 equal parts. Quartiles are values in a given set of
b. Quartile – divides the distribution distribution that divide the data into

c. Decile – divides the distribution three quartiles. These values can be

d. Percentile – divides the
distribution into 100 equal parts.

set (25th percentile).
- 2nd quartile (Q2) – The median of
the data that separates the lower
and upper quartile (50th
percentile).
- 3rd quartile (Q3) – The middle
value between the median and the
highest value of the data set (75th
percentile).
