Shannon Weaver Model

The Shannon Weaver Model is a mathematical model of communication developed by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver in 1948. [1] It views communication as a process involving a sender, encoder, channel, decoder, receiver, feedback, and noise. [2] The model was one of the first attempts to understand communication through a scientific lens and improve technologies like the telephone. [3]

SHANNON

WEAVER MODEL
Subject: Media Theories
By Punith.R
Introduction & Background
The Shannon Weaver Model is a mathematical model for communication
developed by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver in 1948.
• The Shannon Weaver Model was first proposed in the year 1948.
• “A mathematical Theory of Communication” in the Bell System
Technical Journal by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver.
• Shannon developed the theory to improve understanding of
communication via telephone and improve the quality of phones.
Background
• Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver were both
from the United States.
• Claude Shannon was an American
mathematician and electrical engineer
• Warren Weaver was an American scientist and

mathematician
Shannon Weaver Model
Theory
• The Shannon Weaver Model is based on the idea that communication is
a process that involves a elements such as sender ,encoder, channel,
decoder, receiver, feedback, and noise.
• This information flows from a sender to a receiver.
• Each of them sends and receives a message with following steps.
Elements of communication
• Sender : Sender is the source or one who initiate message.
A sender can send a message in different ways like
writing, body language, music etc
• Encoder: The sender translate the information or message
into words or signs or symbols.
Without encoding information is not shared.
• Channel: Channel is a medium, here medium can be telephone, print,
email, tv, radio, post, word of mouth.
• Decoder: It is the process where the receiver interprits message and
translate the meaning full information.
.
• Receiver: One who receiver the message, one who senses the message.
• Feedback: Receiver response to send a message, reaction, symbols and
signs.
• Noise: Any disturbance that reduces all confesses the clarity or quantity
of message.
Practical Example of
Shannon Weaver model of communication
Thomson made call to his assistant “come here I want to see you”. During
his call, noise appeared (transmission error) and his assistant received “I
want” only. Again Assistant asked Thomson (feedback) “what do you want
Thomson.”

Sender: Thomson
Encoder: Telephone (Thomson)
Channel: Cable
Noise: Distraction in Voice
Decoder: Telephone (Assistant)
Receiver: Assistant.
Due to transmission error or noise, Assistant can’t able to understand
Thomson’s messages.
Conclusion
The Shannon Weaver Model of communication is the ‘mother of all models’
of human communication.
It is also known as the ‘information theory’.
It is a mathematical theory considered to be a ‘linear’ communication
model.
