TYPES
OF
INTERPRETING
“The interpretation of dreams is
the royal road to a knowledge of
the unconscious activities of the
mind”

----- Sigmund Freud ----

1 Conference Interpreting

Global language service (2021). Mention that,

Conference interpreters translate spoken language in
real time. A thorough knowledge of languages, nerves
of steel, attention to detail and boundless curiosity
are the hallmarks of the professional interpreter.

Interpreters work at every kind of meeting and in any venue.

They work for the major international organizations and for
business clients. Conference interpreters basically ensure that
multilingual events can cater to a variety of guests, and still
run with ease.
2 Community Interpreting

Pfeiffer, J. (2023). Explains that: “Community It is a service provided in communities with large numbers
interpreting is a specific type of interpreting that can take of ethnic minorities, enabling those minorities to access
place in many different settings”. The main purpose of services where the language barrier might be an obstacle.
community interpreting is to assist in the implementation
of important community services.

AREAS:
• Education
• Health care and hospitals
• Public housing and social services
• Transportation services
• Job training
• Refugee and resettlement centers
• Immigration offices
• Lawyers offices, courtrooms, civil rights complaints,
and other legal settings
• Business settings
3 Simultaneous Interpreting

Christoffels, I., & De Groot, A. (2009) “During SI, one has to listen to
and comprehend the input utterance in one language, keep it in working
memory until it has been recoded and can be produced in the other
language, and produce the translation of an earlier part of the input, all
of this at the same time”

This type of interpretation places a lot of pressure on the interpreter,

who must be able to translate from one language into the next and
convey that content to an audience, while also listening to a real-time
speech as it progresses and comprehending how it should be
interpreted.
4 Telephone Interpreting

According to Kalina (2002), Telephone interpreting refers

to situations in which the interpreter works over the
telephone, without seeing one or either of the two primary
parties in the communicative event.

The interpreter may be physically present in the

same venue as one of the two parties, may be
located at one venue while the two primary
parties are in the same one, or else each of the
three parties, including the interpreter, may be at
a separate location.
5 Sign Interpreting

According to Saussure (1916), the sign of language is, a two-sided

psychic entity; it is the union of a concept and an acoustic image.

Sign language interpreters act as mediators, translating messages

expressed in sign language into another format, usually into spoken or
written language, and others.

SOME ASPECTS OF INTERPRETING LANGUAGE SIGNS:

• Specialized Training.
• Knowledge of Sign Language.
• Ethics and Confidentiality
• Preparation and Contextualization
• Rotation and Rest.
