Linux is an open source operating system developed in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. It has grown from a few lines of code to over 23 million lines of code and is free to use, modify, and distribute. Linux interacts directly with hardware and uses system libraries to allow applications to access kernel features. It is portable, secure, lightweight, and easy to update due to its open source nature, though it can be difficult for beginners to use and lacks some applications available on other systems. There are many Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, and OpenSUSE.

Linux Operating System
Early Origins

• This allows for the modification of the source code making it possible for anyone to change the original source code to best suit the users needs.
• This means that Linux is open source and free
Components of Linux • Hardware – This refers to physical parts like the RAM, internal storage and the CPU • Kernel – This is the core part of the OS. It directly interacts with the hardware • System Library- This are special functions or programs which use application programs or system utilities to access kernel features. Advantages of using Linux • It is portable and can work on a variety of hardware • It is an open source operating system so anyone can use it • It is much less vulnerable to security attacks like viruses. • It is lightweight and requires as little as 128 mb of memory to run • Since it is an open source , it is very easy to find updates. • Has a very powerful command line Disadvantages of Linux • The commands are difficult for a beginner to use making it hard for them to use it. • Most applications are not available for Linux. • The concept of drivers in Linux is quite different as they are inbuilt. This makes it harder to use peripheral devices • Since it is open source, Linux lacks an actual technical team to help out incase of any issues. Flavours of Linux • Due to it being open source, there are numerous versions of Linux 1. Ubuntu 2. Fedora 3. Linux Mint 4.
