Medical Microbiology-3

This document discusses infectious diseases and medical microbiology. It defines medical microbiology as the study of microorganisms that cause disease in humans. The major types of infectious agents are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Bacteria are treated with antibiotics, viruses with antivirals, fungi with antifungals, and parasites with antiparasitic drugs. Diagnosis of infectious diseases involves microscopy to examine the size, shape and structure of microbes, and microbial culture techniques to isolate pathogens from samples on selective media.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND MEDICAL
MICROBIOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
• Medical microbiology is applied to
medicine, is a branch of medical
science concerned with the infectious
diseases, treatment, prevention and
diagnosis.
• In addition, this field of science studies
various clinical applications of microbes
for the improvement of health.
• A medical microbiologist studies the
characteristics of pathogens, their
mode of transmission, mechanisms of
infection and growth.
Medical microbiology also known as
“Clinical microbiology” is a subdiscipline of
microbiology dealing with the study of
microorganisms (parasites, fungi, bacteria,
& viruses) capable of infecting and causing
diseases in humans.
Transmission & Treatment of
Infectious disease
BACTERIA:- These one cell organism are
responsible for illness such as strepthroat,
urinary tract infections tuberculosis,
sexually transmitted disease (STD).
It is transmitted through DIRECT CONTACT
( Touching an infected host ).
TREATMENT:- It can be effectively treated
with Antibiotics.
VIRUS:- It is an infectious microbe
consisting of a segment of nucleic acid
(either DNA or RNA ) surrounded by a
protein coat.
Viruses cause a multitute of diseases
ranging from the Common Cold to AIDS.
It is transmitted through INDIRECT
CONTACT (touching a contaminated
object, airborne transmission ).
TREATMENT:- Viral infections can be
treated with Antiviral.
FUNGI:- Many skin diseases such
as ringworm and athletes foot, are
caused by fungi. Other types of
fungi can infect your lungs or
nervous system.
TREATMENT:- Fungal infections
can be treated with Antifungal.
PARASITE:- Malaria is caused by
a tiny parasite that is
transmitted by a mosquito bite.
Other parasites may be
transmitted to humans from
animal feces.
TREATMENT:- It can be treated
with Antiparasitic drugs, such as
Mebendazole.
Diagnosis
(Identification of an infectious agent)

Microscopy Microbial Culture

1. Microscopy
Microscopic examination can provide a
preliminary, tentative identification of
certain infectious agents by revealing their
size, shape and cellular structure. It
includes the staining technique for
identification of infectious agent.
2. Microbial culture
The primary method used for isolating
infectious for study in the laboratory.
Tissue or fluid samples are tested for the
presence of a specific pathogen, which is
determined by growth in a selective or
differential medium.
