Lesson (1) Real

.functions domain, Rang

distinguishes between the
relationship and function.
Objectives: Students will be able to :

• define what is meant by a function,

• identify whether a set of ordered pairs defines a function,
• identify functions from relation diagrams,
• understand how to use the vertical line test to determine whether a
relation’s graph represents a function,
• understand the conditions for which an equation 𝑦=⟨⟩ can be
represented in function notation, 𝑓(𝑥)=⟨⟩.
The relation:
• The relation between set X and set Y is any subset of the
Cartesian product X x Y.
The function:
Not each relation from X to Y is a function but all
functions from X to Y are relations satisfy that :
• Each element in X appears once as a fist projection in one of the ordered
pairs of the relation.
• Each element in X has only one arrow going out to an element of Y in
the arow diagram which represents the relation.
• Each vertical line has only one point from the points of the relation.
Example:

For each element x ∈ X there exists one and only one element y ∈ Y such
that x R y . ( i.e: X Relation with Y ) .
In this case x ∈ X appears one and only one as a first projection in one of
the ordered Paris which determine the relation.
• X is called the Domain of the function.
• Y is called the Codomain of the function.
Solution:

If R is a relation from X to Y such that:

∴R={ (1,1),(2,4),(3,9)} is called a function
∴ the Domain is X = { 1 , 2 , 3 } , the codomain is Y = { 1 , 4 , 5 , 9 }
, the range = {1,4,9} “the set of images in Y”
The vertical line test
Y

If the Vertical line at each element

in the domain passes through only
one point of the points representing 0 X
the relation then this relation is a
function from X Y
gives examples of some relations
and functions and is represented
in different forms
Example:

Solution:
Example:

If X={2,3,4,5} and Y={ 5 , 6 ,10,16,17,26 } and R is a relation from X to Y

where x R y means y = for each x ∊ X , y ∊ Y.

Solution:
Example:

Solution:
The first relation y = 2x-5 each value of X has only one image in y
Put x=2 , y = -1 , (2,-1) ∊ f (x)
Solution:
The second relation y = sin x each value of x has only one
image in y
Put x = 30 , y = sin 30 = , () ∊ f(x)
Example:
understood the meaning of zeros of function
and uses different methods to find the zeros
according to the degree of the function.

The second degree function

f(x) = aa , b , c ∊ R , a≠0
its Zeros are the solution of f(x) = 0
using general formula : x = .
Example (1):
Determine whether the following statement is true or false: The
given figure represents a function.

•A True
•B False
Example (2) :
Determine whether the following statement is true or false: The given
figure represents a function.
•A (a)
•B (b)
•C (c)
•D (a) and (c)
•E all
Example (3) :
In all the following relations, Y is a function in X
except the relation. .........

(a)y= 3X+1
(b)y= - 1
(c)x = -2
(d)Y = sin x
Example (4) :
Which of these sets of ordered pairs does not
represent a function ?
(a){ (1,2) , (2,4) , (3,6) , (4,8) }
(b){ (1,2) , (2,4) , (3,6) , (3,8) }
(c){ (2,10) , (3,15) , (4,20) , (5,25) }
(d){ (2,10) , (2,15) , (4,20) , (4,25) }
a) B and D b) A and d
b) B c) C
The Example (5) :
Which figure represents y as a function in X is ...
