Pertemuan 3 Relasi Dan Fungsi

The document discusses functions and relationships between sets. It defines a function as a relation where each element in the domain (set A) is paired with exactly one element in the codomain (set B). It also defines domain as the set of all elements in set A, codomain as the set of all elements in set B, and range as the set of elements in set B that are paired with elements in set A. Examples are provided to illustrate functional relationships and how to determine if a relation qualifies as a function using the vertical line test.

In the relationship on the side has the
characteristics:
 Members of set A, namely: Aris, Bari, Cecep,
Darla and Fira, all ordered and each ordered
only one type of food. In other words, all
member A ordered food and no one ordered
more than one.
 It is mathematically said that: each member
of set A is paired with member of set B and
its installation is exactly one.
 Relationships like this are called functions or
mappings

Definition of a Function
Given a relation in x and y, we say “y is a function of x” if for every element
x in the domain, there corresponds exactly one element y in the range.

To better understand the function, pay attention to

the following relations:

 This relationship cannot be called function,

because there are members of the P set set
which are paired more than one with members
of the Q set, i.e. b 1 and b 2
 This relationship cannot be called function,
because there are members of the P set which
are c which do not have a partner with the Q
set member
 This relationship is called function. Why? (A
relation called function can be seen from the
requirements that must be met by members of
the P set instead of members of the Q set)

2
DOMAIN, CODOMAIN AND RANGE FUNCTION

Function of set A to set B is notated with f : A → B

Set Ais called Domain (all of the member in set A)

Set B is called Codomain (all of the member in set A)

The set of parts of set B whose members are paired with members set A is called
Region of results or Range

1. A function f : A → B is expressed with the following arrow diagram:

Function domain is Df = {a , b , c , d , e}
Function codomain is Kf = {w , x , y , z}
Function range is Rf = {w , x , z}

2. Determine which of the relations define y as a function of x.

This relation is defined by the set of ordered pairs {(1,4), (2, -1), (3, 2)}.
Notice that for each x in the domain there is only one corresponding y in
the range. Therefore, this relation is a function.

3
When x = 1 there is only one possibility for y: y =4
When x = 2 there is only one possibility for y: y =-1
When x = 3 there is only one possibility for y: y =2
b. This relation is defined by the set of ordered pairs

When there are two possible range elements: y = 3 and y = 4

Therefore, this relation is not a function.

This relation is defined by the set of ordered pairs {(1, 4), (2, 4). (3, 4)}
When x = 1 there is only one possibility for y: y = 4
When x = 2 there is only one possibility for y: y = 4
When x = 3 there is only one possibility for y: y = 4
Because each value of x in the domain has only one corresponding y value,
this relation is a function.

Vertical Line Test

A relation that is not a function has at least one domain element x paired with more
than one range value y. For example, the ordered pairs (4, 2) and (4, 2) do not
constitute a function because two different y-values correspond to the same x.
These
two points are aligned vertically in the xy-plane, and a vertical line drawn through
one point also intersects the other point. Thus, if a vertical line drawn through a
graph of a relation intersects the graph in more than one point, the relation cannot
be a function. This idea is stated formally as the vertical line test

Vertical Line Test

Consider a relation defined by a set of points (x, y) in a rectangular coordinate system. The
graph defines y as a function of x if no vertical line intersects
the graph in more than one point.
4
The vertical line test also implies that if any vertical line drawn through the graph
of a relation intersects the relation in more than one point, then the relation does
not define y as a function of x.
The vertical line test can be demonstrated by graphing the ordered pairs from
the relations in Example 1.
