Key Academic Sources
• Library databases
• Key Academic Databases
1. EBSCO
2. Emerald Library
3. Science Direct
4. ABI Inform
• You should be using these databases to
find literature relevant to your project
• Google Scholar (only for initial searches)
• British Library – UEL library
Searching For Academic
Journal Articles
• Search keywords
• Search titles
• Search journals
• Search authors
• Importance of “academic” sources
When will I Know Who My
Supervisor is?
• Supervisory allocations will be complete
by Monday, June 19th 2023 (most have
already been completed)
• Supervisors will contact students via
email, some may have done so already
• You can use HR7004 research proposal
as a basis for your applied business
project, but you cannot copy this proposal
for this module or you risk plagiarism.
Can I Begin Before I Meet my
Supervisor?
• Absolutely, research is self-starting
• Collect and read journal articles
• Literature review structure – headings and
subheadings
• Get work written
• Consider your “thesis”
What is the Role of the Supervisor?
• Supervisors oversee the research process
• They do not need to be experts
• Meet students to check progress
• All key decisions, thinking, research and writing are
done by the student
• If you have difficulty contacting your supervisor, please
inform the module leader
• Supervisors have 3 business days to respond to email
• Please only contact supervisors and the module leader
during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9-5)
• Please note that supervisors will take annual leave in the
summer
What are the Responsibilities of
the Student?
• Proactive and creative
• To attend meetings
• To e-mail written work in advance
• To keep supervisor updated on progress
• To produce work of good quality
• Time of Academics – Use it Wisely
• Students receive 6-hours with their
supervisors for the academic term
Start and End of Supervision
• Supervision will begin W/C June 19th, your
supervisor will contact you to arrange
supervision
• Supervision will end one week before
submission (August 30th)
• Do not wait until the end of the academic
term to engage with supervision as it may
be too late for your supervisor to
meaningfully input into your project
Common Reasons for Student
Failure
• Lack of understanding of the research
process
• Lack of engagement with supervisor
• Not being proactive
• Not focussing
• Not following advice
• Not understanding UEL regulations
SG7002 Procedure
• 1st attempt is fully supervised and uncapped
• 2nd attempt student receives one remedial hour
and no supervision thereafter (capped at 50%)
• 3rd attempt student must pay to retake the module
and choose a new topic (capped at 50%)
• 4th attempt student receives one remedial hour and
no supervision thereafter (capped at 50%)
Do I need to apply for
Research Ethics Approval?
• All research involving “human participants”
must apply for research ethics approval
• Primary research approaches –
qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods
• Students undertaking secondary research
do not need to apply for research ethics
approval
Procedure for Applying for
Research Ethics Approval
• All research proposals which involve the use of
primary data must apply for research ethics
application
• Students should discuss their research ethics
application with their supervisors and receive
feedback
• Research ethics applications will be due during
Semester C 2023 (July 27th 2023 at 16.00)
• Students will receive feedback on their proposals
from their supervisors and will submit any
amendments if required
SG7002 – Project Submission
• Projects have to be submitted via Turnitin by Wednesday,
September 6th 2023 at 16.00
• You must submit to the Turnitin link under your course and
dedicated to your supervisor (links will follow soon)
• You can submit up to 24-hours late for a 5% penalty
• You can apply for a 7-day extension up to 48-hours prior to
September 6th for no penalty, but you must pre-apply (one extension
per academic term only)
• If you have experienced circumstances that are unforeseen,
unpreventable and have a significant impact upon performance, you
can apply for extenuation
• Full details on extenuation and extension policy are available here:
https://uel.ac.uk/sites/default/files/extensions-and-extenuation---a-st
udent-guide-to-policy-and-process-2021-22.pdf
Breach of Regulations
• If students are found to have used external
providers or have copied previous work
(either online or submitted elsewhere),
they will be subject to a breach of
regulations
• This will impact upon your ability to
graduate and could affect other activities
such as placements and study visas
• The university is taking a harder line on
plagiarism and collusion so be warned
Email Etiquette
• Please note that I am one academic
managing a module of 1,500 students
• Most communication and queries will be
addressed on Moodle announcements
• Emails should be written in clear English
and polite – emails which are not written
in a formal register and present a list of
demands will not be responded to
• Do not email me on multiple channels,
such messages will not be returned
Grades
• Provisional results will be released on
Wednesday, September 27th
• If your work is subject to a breach of
regulations, this process will take longer to
conclude
• Please be patient if mark amendments
need to be made, this inevitably happens
but will be addressed
