PHILIPPINE FILM

Film
A film, also known as a “movie” or “motion
picture” is a series of moving images shown on a
screen usually with sound, that make up a story.
Definitions

Media Technology

History of Philippine Films
Philippine film began with the introduction of the first moving pictures to the
country on January 1, 1987 at the Salon de Pertiera in Manila.
Then, during 1930s, as the film genre was being discovered as a new medium
of art, the scripts and characterization were influenced by popular theater and
familiar local literature
With the emergence of artistic and more mature films as well as a major
improvement in cinematic techniques among filmmakers during 1950s, came
the so- called age of Philippine cinema.

Jose Nepomuceno
- . dubbed as ‘Father of Philippine Cinema,’ his work
mark the start of cinema as an art form in the
Philippines.
- Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden) a movie based on
a popular music play, and was the first movie made
and shown by Filipino filmmaker.

 Music shape emotional responses, create a


rhythmn to scenes and segments, and
comments on the actions

 A musical director is tasked with selecting


appropriate songs and music to heighten the
emotional and dramatic impact of film
scenes.

2. Make up, Coiffeur, and Costumes
 Make- up helps bring a character to life, as it makes
the actors features visible, to create character and
corrective purposes.
 Coiffeur is a film hairstylist in charge of creating/
styling hairstyle designs on set.
 Costumes are one of many tools the director has to
tell the story, it communicates detail of character’s
personality to the audience.

 Acting is an activity in which a story is told by means
of its enactment by an actor who adopts a character.
 A film star is a famous actor/ actress who appears in
film.

 In filmmaking , color is used to set tone of a
scene before any of the actors have even
uttered a word.

 Arts director design sets, oversee artists, and
construction workers, and help determine the overall
look of a film production.

 Sound are crucial to the film as they add realism to the
characters and scenes within the film.
 The use of camera and the functions of technicians are
indispensible in cinematography, as they are the one responsible
in framing, use of angle and controls camera movements.

Brillante Mendoza

Mendoza is a director and production designer, known for his films


Thy Womb (2012), Kinatay (2009), and Kaleldo (2006). The 2011
Italian Film Festival recognized his outstanding work by paying him
homage and ranking him together with Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario
Argento, who are both renowned Italian directors. Critics have hailed
Mendoza as a "neorealist with his films showing the lives of ordinary
people in extraordinary situations, set against the universal struggle of
life, love, and death."

Mendoza is the first and only Filipino to have competed in
the official selection of all three major film festivals in the
world, namely the Cannes, Venice, and Berlin film festivals
with his film, Kinatay, winning for him the Best Director

Laurice Guillen

Guillen is a protégé of Lino Brocka who began her


directorial career with the film, Kasal (1979), starring
Hilda Koronel and Christopher de Leon. Whereas, her
film, Salome (1981), won for her Best Director award in
the Gawad Urian.

After a hiatus in filmmaking, Guillen made Tanging


Yaman (2001), which won several awards at the Metro
Manila Film Festival.
