• Pipe fittings are crucial components behind a healthy,
efficient plumbing system. They are also your best bet to
upgrade outdated pipe mappings without tearing everything
out and restarting from scratch.
ELBOW
• Elbow fittings only have one inlet and one outlet. They are
used to change a line’s direction to help it go around existing
beams and structures. Elbow fittings come in 90, 60, 45, and
22.5-degree bends. You can join multiple elbow fittings to
direct water supply around tight structures or use them
individually at separate points to help a line turn.
TEE
• Tee fittings are the most common type of pipe fittings you
will find. These are T-shaped components with one inlet and
two outlets at 90-degree angles for splitting one supply line
into two or joining two lines into one.
COUPLING
Couplings, or pipe couplers,
are slip-over tubes that go
around the outside of two
pipes to connect them
together. Connections created
by couplings are often
permanent. Therefore,
they’re most suitable in areas
you won’t access once the
pipes are done, such as in
walls and ceilings.
BARB
Barb is defined as one or
more continuous ridges
or bumps on a fitting that
are used to grip the inside
diameter of a tube and
seal the connection. As a
tube is installed on the
fitting, it expands over
the barb.
BUSHING
Bushings, or reducer
bushings, are a type of pipe
fitting made to connect pipes
of different sizes. The larger
end (male end) of a bushing is
inserted into the larger pipe,
and the smaller pipe is
inserted into the bushing’s
smaller end (female end).
Common bushing materials
include brass, bronze, steel,
stainless steel, and PVC.
NIPPLE
Nipple fittings are a relative to
coupling fittings. Instead of
going around the outside of
two pipes, nipples are
designed with two male ends
to connect two female-
threaded pipes. Nipple is one
of the most popular types of
pipe fittings for straight pipe
connections
REDUCER
A pipe reducer is a pipe
fitting that connects a
larger pipe to a smaller
pipe. Thus, it reduces the
size of the pipe in the
pipe system, from one
size to another. Pipe
reducers may frequently
be used to connect pipes
of different sizes.
PLUMBING UNION
A union is a threaded fitting
which allows the pipe work to
be separated and
reconnected without any
horizontal movement in the
pipe. It can be a standalone
pipe fitting connecting two
pieces of pipe, or an integral
part of another fitting (such
as a ball valve) which allows it
to be separated
WYE
Wye fittings are used to
connect multiple
horizontal lines to reduce
clogging and waste build-
up. They can also be used
to divide one line into
multiple branches.
END CAP
An end cap is a female
threaded fitting and is
threaded over the end of
a piece of pipe to seal it
off. They are responsible
for transporting liquids,
gases, and other
substances from one
point to another.
PLUG
A plug is a male threaded
fitting which seals the
end run of a pipe when
fitted into a female
threaded fitting.
PIPE CLIP
The job of pipe clamps is to
securely hold pipes, while
allowing for any movement or
expansion to enable the
application's maximum
performance. Pipe clips, as
they're also called, are
typically used in plumbing,
heating, drainage and
electrical applications and
come in a range of different
materials.
CROSSOVER
A crossover is a one piece
tubular section used to join or
change two different
components with different
size of tube, or type of
connection. These
components can be casing,
tubing, drill pipe or
combination.
BALL VALVE
A ball valve is a form of
quarter-turn valve that uses a
pivoting ball that has been
drilled through to control
flow. When the hole is in line
with the flow direction, it
allows fluids or gasses to pass
through. Alternatively, when
the ball is turned 90 degrees,
the flow is stopped
completely.
NEEDLE VALVE
Needle valves are
commonly used to
control flow and protect
delicate gauges from
damage caused by
sudden pressure surges
of liquids and gases.
They're ideal for systems
using lighter and less
viscous materials with
low flow rates.
P TRAP
P-traps, named after their
shape, contain a u-shaped
bend that filters wastewater
as it enters a plumbing
system. The trap is connected
to a sink, bathtub, and
shower with a J-bend on one
end and exits into your
drainage system.
SHARK BITE
Shark Bite fittings are a type
of push-fit fitting. They are
designed for copper, PEX,
CPVC, and PE-RT pipe and
tubing. The fitting has two
jaws that grip the pipe
when it is inserted. A
release collar on the fitting
allows you to remove the
pipe if necessary.
