1. Definition Of Topiary
The term topiary is derived from the Roman
word 'topiaria' meaning ornamental gardening.
Topiary is the art and practice of clipping and
shearing of small trees, shrubs and herbs to
develop and maintain a clearly defined
ornamental, geometric or fantastic shapes.
The shape of topiary may be globe, sphere,
dome, table, chair, cube, animals, birds etc.
2. History Of Topiary

 It was immensely popular in Ancient Rome


using cypress trees .
 Dutch in the 15th century became fascinate
with creating topiary in animals shapes, as
did 17th century England , the French
preferred creating topiary in geometric
designs.
3. Characteristics Of Plant For
Topiary
The plants which are used in topiary should
have following characters:
 Can tolerate high training and pruning
 Deep evergreen
 Mostly woody
 Have small foliage all the year round
 Produce profuse branches quickly after
pruning
 Have compact and columnar growth habits
4. Plants For Topiary
Durant, China box, Cypress, Juniper, Ixora, Thuja,
Child life tree, Streblus, Clerodendrum etc. are
commonly chosen for topiary.

5. Making of Topiary
a) Planting: Selected plants from seed is better
b) Outline: Frame of outline with wire.
c) Tying and growing: The growing branches are
tied with the outline frame and grown
accordingly
d) Pruning and clipping: Necessary pruning and
clipping should be done to fit the outline.
6. Maintenance
Regular pruning, clipping and cleaning should be
done for maintaining the desired size and shape.
Manuring and watering should also be done.

7. Conclusion
At last we can say that, Topiary is one type of
living sculpture that has gone in and out of favor
through the ages.
