Communicating Devices
Communicating Devices
• Hub
• Switch
• Router
• Bridge
• Gateway
• Modem
• Repeater
Hub
• It is a physical layer device which has multiple ports that are used to connect
multiple computers or segments of LAN together.
• It does the work of Data forwarding to other computers.
• It has two types:
• Passive Hub: It allows the signal to be passed without any change
• Active Hub : It amplify the signal as it moves from one device to another.
• But hub is not so secure and safe.
• Copying the data packets on all the interfaces makes it slower and more
congested.
• To overcome this problem , we use network switch.
Switch
• It does the work of “Filter and forwarding” which is a more intelligent
way of dealing with the Data packets.
• It follows Packet switching technique.
• It helps to prevent traffic overloading in LAN
Router
• It is smartest or most complicated device.
• It can work like a switch that routes data packets based on their IP
addresses.
Difference between Hub , Switch &
Router
HUB SWITCH ROUTER
Connect devices within the same Connect devices to network Connect two different network
network
Do not store MAC addresses Store MAC addresses Store MAC addresses
Bridge
• A bridge connects two or more LANs.
• It operates at data link layer.
• It handles network that follow the same protocol
Gateway
• Gateway is a network device used to connect two or more dissimilar
networks.
Repeaters
• It is used to extend transmission So that the signal can cover longer
distance or be received on the other side of an obstruction.
