Understanding Narrative Structures!

● What is a narrative structure?

● Why is it important in storytelling?
● How does it affect the way we understand a story?
Defining Narrative Structure
● The framework that organizes a story
● Includes plot, character, setting, and theme
● Determines how events are ordered and presented
● Can you think of a story with a memorable structure?
Key Elements of Narrative Structure
● Exposition: Setting the stage
● Rising Action: Building tension
● Climax: Point of highest conflict
● Falling Action: Aftermath of the climax
● Resolution: Tying up loose ends

How do these elements contribute to your favorite book or movie?

Linear Narrative Structure
● Events are told in chronological order
● Easy to follow and understand
● Common in many classic novels and films
● What's an example of a linear narrative you've encountered?
Non-Linear Narrative Structure
● Events are out of chronological order
● Can create mystery or suspense
● Used to explore themes or character development
● Can you name a story that uses a non-linear approach?
Circular Narrative Structure
● Story ends where it begins
● Themes of cycles and repetition
● Can leave a lasting impact on the reader
● Have you read any stories that end where they start?
Interactive Narrative Structure
● Reader or viewer makes choices that affect the story
● Often found in video games or choose-your-own-adventure
books
● Creates a personalized experience
● What interactive stories have you experienced?
Parallel Narrative Structure
● Multiple storylines happening at the same time
● Can show different perspectives or time periods
● Eventually, storylines may intersect or influence each other
● Do you know any films or books with parallel narratives?
Flashback and Foreshadowing
● Flashbacks: A tool for revealing past events; can be used to provide context
for the audience
○ Example: "To Kill a Mockingbird" uses Scout's memories to provide
background.
● Foreshadowing: Hints about what will happen later
● Foreshadowing can be used to build anticipation or set a mood for the reader
○ Example: In "The Hunger Games," Katniss's skills hint at her survival.
Conflict Types in Narrative Structure
● Internal Conflict: Struggle within a character
○ Ex: Hamlet's indecision in Shakespeare's play
● External Conflict: Character vs. outside force (another
character, society, nature, a monster, etc.)
○ Ex: Andy and his former employer
● How can conflict affect character development?

Discuss how external conflict drives the plot forward in

Philadelphia.
Theme and Its Significance in Narrative Structure

● Central idea or message of the story

● Often reflects universal human experiences
● Themes can be explicit or implicit
● Consider the theme of power in "Animal Farm" – how does it guide the
narrative?
