Input and Output

Devices of a
Computer

By Udit Kaushik (2023M0701014)

Input Devices of a Computer
Input devices allow the users to send
signals to the computer to perform a
certain task.

The receiver at this end is the Central

Processing Unit (CPU) which then sends the
signal to the output devices.

Input devices further classify according to

modality like visual or audio, discrete or
continuous, and is it direct or indirect.

Keyboard
● Keyboard is a basic input device for data entry with keys for numbers, letters,
and functions.

● Keyboards connect to computers via WiFi or USB systems for effective data
input.

● Include typing keys (A-Z, 0-9), numeric keypad, function keys, control keys,
and special-purpose keys.

● Most popular keyboard layout, with the top six letters spelling "qwerty."

● While there are various layouts, QWERTY is widely used globally, considered
the standard for modern computing.
Mouse
● Hand-supported device for cursor
movement with buttons and a wheel, often
used on a flat surface.

● Laptops use touchpads as a mouse

alternative, offering similar cursor control.

● Invented by Douglas C. Engelbart in 1963,

the mouse has evolved from rollerball to
modern optical technology.

● Mouse connection port varies based on

computer and mouse type, accommodating
different interfaces.

● Easy to use, affordable, and enables faster

cursor movement compared to alternative
Joystick

Joystick Functionality: Spherical ball stick-

type pointing device for cursor movement,
distinct from a mouse.

Versatile Control: Moves in all directions, ideal

for gaming and computer-aided design (CAD).

Microphone
● Converts acoustic energy into an electric
signal for computer-based recording,
benefitting professionals like voice actors
and filmmakers.

● Small size, affordability, and high response

sensitivity make microphones versatile
tools for quality audio recording.

● Modern microphones double as voice

recognition devices, offering features like
"Speech Input Device" for convenient text
dictation.

● Beyond traditional recording, microphones

have advanced to cater to diverse
applications, adapting to the changing
Trackball
● Mouse alternative with a ball and buttons; thumb on the ball,
fingers on buttons for handling.

● Advantages:
- Scrolling Feature: External roller for smooth screen movement
and button functionality.
- Customizable Buttons: Programmable for specific actions in
browsers or applications.
- 360-Degree Rotation: Allows screen rotation in all directions
for gaming and graphic design.

● Trackballs gained popularity in portable devices due to their

compact size.

● Users often prefer trackballs for perceived reliability over mice.

● Small size makes trackballs easy to carry and store, enhancing

their usability in portable computing.
Output Devices of a Computer
Output devices present processed data in various
forms like images, graphics, text, or audio.

They transmit data from computers to users or other

devices, facilitating communication.

Designed for human use, output devices transform

processed data into audio, video, or physical
reproductions.

Output devices play a crucial role in converting

processed data into understandable formats for

Speaker
● Speaker Functionality: Audio output component
linked to computers, works with sound cards for
audible output.

● Sound Card Role: Integrated into computers,

processes audio and delivers sound through
connected speakers.

● Laptop Integration: Built-in speakers common in

laptops, often near the keyboard.

● Volume Enhancement: External speakers used for

louder audio when built-in options are insufficient.

● Audio Improvement: External speakers enhance

sound quality and volume for improved computer
audio.
Printer
● Essential for transforming digital information into
physical copies.

● Used for various purposes in offices, homes,

presentations, and businesses.

● Output size depends on the printer's paper size

requirements.

● Press Ctrl + P for a fast and convenient way to
initiate document printing.
Monitor
● Monitors, present in all computers, visually
display data.

● Connected to the computer's motherboard,

the video adapter transmits information for
display.

● Users view files, images, videos, and more in

real-time on the screen.

● Monitors allow the examination of various

content formats in their original form.

● Monitor Types:
- LCD
- CRT
- LED
Headphones
● Headphones allow a single user to privately
listen to an audio source, unlike
loudspeakers that emit sound openly.

● Also referred to as earphones or

colloquially as "cans," headphones provide
individualized audio experiences.

● Headphones produce sound at a lower

frequency, making them suitable for
personal use rather than large areas like
grounds or parks.

● Due to their design, headphones are only

audible to the person using the device,
ensuring privacy in public spaces.
Projector
● Versatile Output Device: A multimedia projector, akin to a
magic wand, offers quick and diverse functionalities.

● Cinematic Projection: Enables a home theatre experience by

projecting films on a wall or screen, even in small spaces.

● Visuals in Large Spaces: Used in movie theatres and

auditoriums, the projector connects to computers for
presenting both stationary and moving visuals on a larger
screen.

● Versatility for Presentations: Ideal for presentations, data

visualizations, and documentaries, projectors enhance
audience engagement and understanding.

● Enhanced Viewing: Projectors contribute to an improved

viewing experience, making them valuable for
entertainment and educational settings.
