I. INPUT DEVICES
- Input devices are hardware devices that takes instructions from
the user and passes it to a processing unit. Input devices can
transmit data to other devices by taking it from one device but
cannot receive data.

Examples of Input Devices:

 Keyboard – It is a hardware device with keys with alphabets and

numbers on it and is used to take alphanumeric input.
 Mouse – It is a hardware device that takes input by clicking on keys on
the surface of the mouse. The mouse is a pointing device that points to
icons on the screen to select them.
 Microphone – It takes sound as a form of input and can convert it to a
digital or electrical form.
 Joystick – It is usually used to play games. It has a stick that is inclined
to angle to control movement in video games.
 Scanner: It is used to scan images, text, or documents to convert them
into digital form.

II. OUTPUT DEVICES

- Output devices are hardware devices that receive data from the
processing unit and other devices and return the result of the
data—for example, monitors and speakers.

Examples of Output Devices:

 Monitor – It is a device through which we see and operate our software.

All icons, text, and images are displayed here. We see all the outputs
on this screen.
 Printer – It produces hard copies or prints of images, text, or
documents on the computer.
 Speakers – They yield output in the form of audio and allow users to
listen to music, game sounds, etc. Speakers can be wired and wireless.
 Projector – It produces output by projecting images and videos on a big
screen. When connected to a computer, the image on the monitor will
only be displayed on the screen.
 Headphones – These devices also produce audio outputs but are only
for personal use.
Input How it works & interacts with the Computer
Devices
Keyboard A keyboard detects key presses, converts them to digital
signals (scan codes), sends these to the computer, which
translates them into characters or commands through the
operating system, and displays the output or executes actions.
Mouse The mouse allows users to control the on-screen cursor, click
on objects, and interact with programs. Movement and button
clicks are translated into digital signals that the computer
processes to perform tasks like selecting items, dragging
objects, or opening files.
Microphon A microphone captures audio input, which is then converted
e into a digital signal that the computer can process. It’s used
for voice commands, communication (e.g., video calls), or
recording audio. The computer interprets the sound waves and
processes them for various applications.
Joystick A joystick is mainly used for gaming and controlling certain
applications (like flight simulators). When you move the
joystick, it sends analog or digital signals to the computer that
correspond to movement in a particular direction. The
computer processes this data to move objects or characters on
screen accordingly.
Scanner A scanner converts physical documents or images into digital
form by passing light over the surface and capturing the
reflected data. The computer processes this data, turning it
into an image or text file that can be edited or stored digitally.

Output How it work & interact with the computer

Devices
Monitor The monitor displays visual output from the computer. It
receives signals (typically via HDMI, VGA, or DisplayPort) from
the computer’s graphics card and translates them into
images, videos, or text that you see on the screen. The
computer’s software and hardware determine what is
displayed based on user actions.
Printer A printer produces physical copies (paper prints) of digital
documents or images. It receives data from the computer via
a wired or wireless connection, processes the information, and
then uses ink or toner to print the content onto paper. Printers
can be used for text, graphics, or photos.
Speakers Speakers output sound by converting digital audio signals
from the computer into sound waves. The computer
processes audio data (from media files, applications, etc.) and
sends it to the speakers, which produce sound. They connect
to the computer via a 3.5mm audio jack, USB, or Bluetooth.
Projector A projector displays Images, videos, or presentations on a
larger surface (like a wall or screen). It works similarly to a
monitor but projects the visual data it receives from the
computer onto a bigger surface. It’s often used for
presentations or entertainment. It connects to the computer
using HDMI, VGA, or wirelessly.
Headphone Headphones work similarly to speakers but are worn over the
s ears for personal audio output. They receive audio signals
from the computer and convert them into sound waves that
are delivered directly to the user’s ears. Headphones connect
to the computer through a wired connection (usually a 3.5mm
jack or USB) or wirelessly (Bluetooth).
