Fundamental Theory

A signal is defined as any physical quantity that varies with time, space, or any
other independent or variables.

A system may also be defined as a physical device that performs an operation

on signal.

Signal processing can be defined as an action to process the signal. This

process is done to achieve a desired output signal.

To sum up

Signal processing involves signal and system in which

signal processing takes place

3
Classification of Signals
Continuous-Time vs Discrete-Time

They take on values in the They are defined

continuous interval only at certain specific values of time

4
Continuous-Time Signals

Speech signal is an example of

continuous-time signals

Mathematically, these signals can be described by functions of a continuous variable

g.

5
Discrete-Time Signals

It is taken at certain time

DSP, discrete-time signals are taken at equally spaced interval for

mputational convenience and mathematical tractability

6
Discrete-Time Signals

In order for a signal to be

processed digitally, it must be
discrete in time and its values
must be discrete (i.e., it must be a
digital signal).

Example of eight samples of

digital signal with four different
amplitude values and
