Analog vs Digital Signals

Understanding the Difference with the help of diagram

Analog Signals
 Definition: Continuous signals with infinite values-
 Examples: Sound waves, light waves,
temperature-
• Characteristics:
• Continuous range of values
• Can be measured at any point
• Prone to noise and interference
Digital Signals
 Definition:
Discrete signals with finite values
 Examples:
Binary code, digital images, text
 Characteristics:
• Discrete range of values (0s and 1s)
• Can only be measured at specific points
• Less prone to noise and interference
Key Differences
 Analog:
• Continuous
• Infinite values
• Prone to noise

 Digital:
• Discrete
• Finite values
• Less prone to noise
Advantages of Digital Signals
 Improved accuracy and precision
 Increased storage and transmission capacity
 Better resistance to noise and interference
 Easier to process and analyze
Disadvantages of Digital Signals

 Requires conversion from analog (A/D conversion)

 Can be affected by quantization error
 May require more complex processing
Real-World Applications
 Analog:
• Audio equipment,
• medical devices,
• sensors-
 Digital:
• Computers,
• smartphones,
• digital cameras
