PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN THE NATURE
ANDTHE WORLD
• Patterns are visual designs, illustrations or
representation of repeated geometric visuals.

• Patterns can also be like repeated ways of


something that happens or something that
was done.
Example of Patterns that we may see
around us
MATHEMATICS IN OUR NATURE

• Fractals - is a geometric shape that has a


fractional dimension. Self-similar, which
means that they consist of smaller copies
of the whole.
• Symmetry - defined as a balanced and
proportionate similarity that is found in two
halves of an object. It means one-half is the
mirror image of the other half.
Bilateral symmetry - A condition in which
the right and left sides of an item are
mirror images of one another.
Radial Symmetry - A property of an item that can be
divided into two matching halves by many different
lines, which all intersect one another at a single point in
the center.

Spiral - is one of the most beautiful forms in nature,


and it occurs in a wide variety of systems and at an
enormous range of scales.
FIBONACCI SEQUENCE
• Named after Leonardo of Pisa (1170-1240),
an Italian mathematician.
• Liber Abaci - involving the growth of a
hypothetical population of rabbits based on
idealized assumptions.
• He noted that, after each monthly generation,
the number of pairs of rabbits increased from
1 to 2 to 3 to 5 to 8 to 13 etc.
• Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2
Sample Problem: Find Fib11

Solution:

Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2
F11 = F11-1 + F11-2
F11 = F10 + F9
F11 = 55 + 34
The petals of a Sunflower, for instance, are
arranged in a very orderly way while its head
usually shows two types of different spirals
that is, 34 spiral in one direction and 55 in the
other.

Likewise, the fruit of a pineapple exhibits the


same mathematical pattern. Counting the
“eyes” of the pineapple diagonally from
bottom to top, it will give the numbers 5, 8, 13.
GOLDEN RATIO
• Fibonacci Sequence = {1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377,
610, 987,..}
• Now if we try to divide the consecutive terms of this sequence we get,
1 ÷ 1 = 1.00000 21 ÷13 = 1.61538
2 ÷ 1 = 2.00000 34 ÷ 21 = 1.61905
3 ÷ 2 = 1.50000 55 ÷ 34 = 1.61765
5 ÷ 3 = 1.66667 89 ÷ 55 = 1.61818
8 ÷ 5 = 1.60000 144 ÷ 89 = 1.61798
13 ÷ 8 = 1.62500 233 ÷ 144 =1.61806
• What do you notice with the ratio values as it goes farther and farther?
• These number approaches a value of ф (Phi) approximately
equal to 1.618. This is called the Golden Ratio.
This is called the Golden Rectangle. It is made
up of squares that is represented by the
numbers in the Fibonacci sequence

Golden Ratio and the Human Face


A typical example where this ratio can be realize can be
found in our face. According to beauty experts,
symmetrical faces are known to be beautiful faces
because of the proportions among the lengths and
shapes of its feature. That is, of the phi value 1.618 can
be achieved by taking ratio between:

Outer and inner edge of the eye:


Center of the nose
Outer edges of lips: upper ridges of lips
Width of center tooth: width of second tooth
Width of eye: width of iris

And some other facial features, one.


SAMPLE PROBLEM
• A wood that is 120 meters in length is needed to be cut into
two parts such that the ratio of the parts constitute the
Golden Ratio. What must be the lengths of the wood?
• SOLUTION :
a/b = (a + b)/a
Where a = longer
b = shorter
1.618 = (120 m)/a
1.618 a = 120 m
a = 120 m /1.618
a = 74.17 m longer b = 120m – a
= 120m – 74.17m
b = 45.83 m shorter
