MOTION

By Arshpreet Ahuja IX-E

WHAT IS MOTION?

• We can define motion as the change of position of an object with

respect to time.
• Example: A book falling off a table, water flowing from the tap,
rattling windows, etc all exhibit motion. Even the air that we breathe
exhibits motion! Everything in the universe moves.
DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT

DISTANCE DISPLACEMENT
• The total length of the path • The shortest distance
covered between initial and between initial and final
final position is known as position is known as
Distance Displacement
• It is a scalar physical • It is a vector physical
quantity quantity
• It can be positive but never • It can be positive, negative
zero or negative or zero
SPEED AND VELOCITY

SPEED VELOCITY
• Speed is defined as the rate of • Velocity can be defined as the
change of position of an object in rate of change of the object’s
any direction. position with respect to a frame
of reference and time.
• Velocity = Displacement/Time
• Speed = Distance/Time
• Vector Physical quantity
• Scalar Physical quantity
• Can be changed by either
• Can be changed by changing
changing magnitude or direction
magnitude only
UNIFORM MOTION

• UNIFORM MOTION : It is defined

as the motion of an object in
which the object covers equal
distances in equal intervals of
time

• Example: A ball pushed in free

space will continue to move
uniformly, covering equal
distances in equal intervals of
time along a straight path.
NON-UNIFORM MOTION
• NON- UNIFORM MOTION : It is defined as the motion of an object in
which the object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.

• Example: A ball takes curved path when thrown . Its direction of motion
changes with time. Also, it covers unequal distance in equal intervals of
time.
ACCELERATION

• Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity

• Mathematically, Acceleration = (Final velocity – Initial
velocity)
time
• SI Unit of acceleration is m/s^-2
GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION

Graphical Representation

Distance-Time
Graph Velocity-Time Graph
DISTANCE-TIME GRAPH

• A distance-time graph shows how far an object has travelled in a given

time
• Distance is taken on the y-axis and time on the x-axis
• The slope of the line is equal to the speed of the object
VELOCITY-TIME GRAPH

• A velocity-time graph shows the velocity of an object in a given time

• Distance is taken on the y-axis and time on the x-axis
• The slope of the line is equal to the acceleration
CIRCULAR MOTION

• The motion of a body in a circular

path is called circular motion
• Uniform circular motion- If a body
moves in a circular path with
uniform speed, its motion is
called uniform circular motion. It
is accelerated motion since its
direction is changing
continuously.
