INDUCTION MOTOR
•The induction motor converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy.
•It is an alternating-current motor in which torque is
produced by the reaction between a varying
magnetic field generated in the stator and the rotor.
•Induction motor works on Faraday's law of
electromagnetic induction.
PARTS OF INDUCTION MOTOR
1)Stator-The stator is the stationary portion of the motor and
delivers a rotating magnetic field to interact with the rotor.
1.1Stator frame- it is the outer most cylindrical steel frame
which protects the inside winding and core.
1.2Stator core-It is a hollow cylinder where, there are teeth
and slots for copper winding. these slots are laminated in order to
reduce Eddy current.
1.3. Stator winding-It is three phase balanced winding
either connected in star or delta and housed in slots of the stator.

2)Rotor-The rotor is the central component of the
motor, and is fixed to the shaft. The rotor is
generally constructed of copper or aluminum
strips attached at each end to a circular fixture.
The magnetic field generated by the stator
induces a current in the rotor, which then creates
its own magnetic field.
The interaction of the magnetic fields in the
stator and rotor results in a mechanical torque of
the rotor.
In some induction motors, the copper bars are
replaced with slip rings and copper windings that
behave in the same way.
Types of rotor
1)Squirrel Cage rotor-A squirrel-cage rotor is the rotating part of the
common squirrel-cage induction motor. It consists of a cylinder of steel
laminations, with aluminum or copper conductors embedded in its
surface. In operation, the non-rotating stator winding is connected to an
alternating current power source; the alternating current in the stator
produces a rotating magnetic field. The rotor winding has current
induced in it by the stator field, like a transformer except that the
current in the rotor is varying at the stator field rotation rate minus the
physical rotation rate. The interaction of the magnetic fields of currents
in the stator and rotor produce a torque on the rotor.
CAGE ROTOR
• 2)Wound rotor-This rotor is in the form of 3 phase
winding.Cylindrical rotor outer periphery, there are slots
in which a 3-phase ac winding is wound. The rotor core
is laminated in construction. On the extension of the
shaft there are three slip rings made of brass or copper.
Each phase terminal of rotor winding is connected to a
slip ring, over each slip ring, there is brush from which
the conductor is going outside and short circuited as
shown. This is called a slip ring induction motor.
WOUND ROTOR
WORKING
• Induction Motor works on the Principle of
Electromagnetic Induction .The
electromagnetic induction is the
phenomenon in which the electromotive
force induces across the electrical
conductor when it is placed in a rotating
magnetic field.
• When the three phase supply is given to
the stator, the rotating magnetic field
produced on it.
• The polarities of the magnetic field vary by
concerning the positive and negative half
cycle of the AC supply. The change in
polarities makes the magnetic field rotates.
WORKING
• The conductors of the rotor are stationary. This stationary conductor cut the
rotating magnetic field of the stator, and because of the electromagnetic
induction, the EMF induces in the rotor. This EMF is known as the rotor
induced EMF.
• The conductors of the rotor are short-circuited either by the end rings or by
the help of the external resistance. The relative motion between the
rotating magnetic field and the rotor conductor induces the current in the
rotor conductors. As the current flows through the conductor, the flux
induces on it. The direction of rotor flux is same as that of the rotor current
• Now we have two fluxes one because of the rotor and another because of
the stator. These fluxes interact each other
• This phenomenon induces the torque on the conductor, with this shaft
attached to conductor rotates and electrical energy is converted into
mechanical energy
Slip
Induction motor rotor always
rotate at a speed less than
synchronous speed. The
difference between the main
flux speed. The difference
between the main flux speed
(Ns) and their rotor speed (N) is
called slip.
FORMULAS
Slip is usually expreseed as a percentage of
synchoronous speed (Ns)and is represented
by s
% slip s = (Ns-N)/Ns *100
or
Fractional slip, s =(Ns-N)/Ns
Therefore rotor speed N=Ns(1-s)
the difference between syncronous speed and
rotor speed is called slip speed i.e.
Slip speed=Ns-N
TYPES OF INDUCTION MOTOR
•Three Phase induction motors-3-phase induction motor converts 3-phase
input electrical power into output mechanical power. These types of
motors are known as self-starting induction motors and
motors use no capacitor, start winding, centrifugal switch,
or other starting devices

•Single Phase induction motors-Single Phase induction

motor uses a single-phase supply, for its operation.Single-
phase motor is also known as residential voltage since it
is more reliable and a better choice for driving small loads
such as in appliances in homes and small businesses
APPLICATIONS OF INDUCTION MOTOR
There are two types of induction motors, Single Phase and Three Phase
motors and both have similar uses but different power consumption.

Applications of Single Phase Induction Motors:

• Pumps
• Mixers
• High speed vacuum cleaners
• Electric shavers
• Drilling machines CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
ELECTRIC SHAVER DRILLLING MACHINE
COMPRESSOR FANS
Applications of Three Phase Induction Motors:
Three-phase induction motors are used extensively in domestic
and industrial appliances because these are rugged in
construction requiring little to no maintenance, comparatively
cheaper, and require supply only to the stator. Some examples
are:
• Lifts
• Cranes
• Hoists
• Large capacity exhaust fans
• Driving lathe machines
• Crushers
• Oil extracting mills CRANES
