Public Sewer
Line
Sewage Disposal- the disposal of
waste matter such as feces or dirty
water from homes and factories.
5
Public Sewer Line- a sewer main, lying
within a street or right-of-way and which is
owned and controlled by the city.
6
The Combination Public Sewer- the oldest type
of public sewer that conveys both storm water and
sanitary wastes.
The Sanitary Sewer- a public sewer that carries
regular sanitary wastes only. It terminates in
sewage dispersal plant.
The Storm Drain- a public sewer line that carries
storm water. It terminates in a natural drain such as
canals, lakes and rivers.

10
Cesspool- a hole in the ground
curbed with stone, bricks, CHB, or
other materials laid in such a manner
as to allow raw contaminated sewage
to leach into the soil. The organic
w a s t e a c c u m u l a t e a n d fi n a l l y
disposed of by disintegration process .
11
Privy- a concrete sealed vault
with a wooden shelter constructed
for the collection of raw sewage.
The disintegration of excrement is
accomplished in the same manner
as in a cesspool. It is objectionable
because of the danger of
containing the source of water
s u p p l y.
12
Septic tank- a device or receptacle
used to expedite the composition of the elements
contained in a raw sewage waste. Raw sewage
consists consist of water, and settleable solid
called organic materials that con be precipitated in
a septic tank in a very short time.
13
Digestive chamber – the first chamber
allows the heavier solids to settle to the
bottom of the tank, it should have at least
one half to two thirds of the entire tanks
volume.
Leaching chamber - the second chamber
allows for finer solids to settle, the second
chamber can be around half the size of the
first chamber.
14
Scum – a layer or film of foreign matter—
such as fat, oil, and grease (FOG)—that has
risen to the surface of water or wastewater.
Sludge- the solids that collect at the bottom
of the tank and where most of the bacteria
involved in the breakdown of biodegradable
material.

Location of

System
18
1. Septic tanks should be located not less
than 15 meters away from potable water
to prevent contamination.
2. Where there is public sewer pipe, septic
tanks are not allowed.
3. No septic tank shall be installed within or
under a house.
4. The inlets and outlets are submerged and
arranged so as not to disturb the sludge
or SCUM.
19
5. The bottom of the Tank should slope
(1:10) minimum towards the manhole in
the center to facilitate cleaning.
6. The top cover and the manhole are
usually extended 15 cm above the
surface of the soil to overcome surface
water infiltration

Determine the size of a septic tank to
serve 200 persons in a commercial
establishment. Assume Width is 1.2m/100
person and 1.8m total depth. Also use
minimum design liquid content.
