DENOTATION

• An expression is said to be denotative when it


gives a dictionary meaning. Thus is also called
literal or surface meaning. For instance, the
expression "He kicked the bucket" can be taken
ordinarily to mean that someone actually kicked
a physical bucket if it actually happened.
• So, in dictionaries, the ordinary, literal, surface
or denotative meanings of words appear first
before any further contextual usages of those
words.
• Denotation can also be defined as the exact,
literal meaning of a word.
• More example are; Dog, the literal meaning is
an animal with four legs, a domestic animal.
• Another one is chair; a furniture work with
four legs used to sit.
CONNOTATIVE
• Connotation is the act of giving a separate or
hidden or intended meaning to a word or an
expression. Actually, a speaker or writer may
mean something different from the real
meanings of the words used in his or her
expression(s). This intended meaning is what
is referred to as contextual or connotative
meaning
• . Also, we may deduce a different meaning in
between the lines of words and expressions
read or heard. Since such words are not
immediately gotten from the ordinary words
used, we say they are connotative. However, it
is wrong to assume every word synonym as
being connotative.
• Connotation is the unspoken, hidden meaning
that gives a word more emotional impact.
• Connotation gives the reader or listener a
distinct impression or feeling, calling on
emotion rather than fact.
• Through their connotations, words set a tone
and can reveal hidden opinions, attitudes or
judgments.
• Connotation is the secondary meaning
associated feelings or images a word evokes in
the reader.
