Air Quality

The document discusses air quality, its measurement, and major sources of air pollution including particulate matter, ground-level ozone, and carbon monoxide. It explains the Air Quality Index (AQI) as a tool to assess air cleanliness and associated health effects, regulated by the EPA. Additionally, it highlights the importance of real-time data and presents a case study framework to analyze air quality in specific communities.

Air Quality

How will you know if a food is

safe to eat? or water if it's safe
to drink or to take in?
What will it look like if
people or organisms is
experiencing a good or
poor air quality?
Major sources of air
• pollution:
Particulate Matter (PM)- combustion of fossil
fuels, industrial processes, construction
activities, and natural sources.
• Ground Level Ozone (O3)-Emissions from
vehicles, industrial facilities, Solvent Use: Some
household products, paints,
• Carbon Monoxide (CO)- motor vehicle
emissions, wood burning
Major sources of air
pollution:
• Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)- burning of coal and
oil, particularly in power plants and
industrial facilities.
• Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)- Biomass burning,
agricultural Activities, combustion of Fossil
fuels.
AIR QUALITY
“Air quality” refers to the condition
of the air within our surrounding.
Good air quality pertains to the
degree which the air is clean, clear
and free from pollutants.
How Is Air Quality
Measured?
AIR QUALITY INDICATOR
S
Air Quality Index (AQI)- tells
you how clean or polluted
your air is and the health
effects of common air
pollutants.

AIR QUALITY INDICATOR

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
calculates the AQI for five major air
pollutants regulated by the Clean Air
Act: ground-level ozone, particle
pollution (also known as particulate
matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur
dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide
How Does the AQI Work?

Think of the AQI as a yardstick that runs

from 0 to 500. The higher the AQI
value, the greater the level of air
pollution and the greater the health
concern.
Understanding the AQI
The AQI is divided into six categories:

Why measure air
quality?
How to measure air
quality?
One of the simple ways of measuring
air is to use a simple collection
device. You will need a pump to pump
the air into the collector. The collector
could be a filter or a chemical solution
that will contain the pollutant. Once
this is collected, you have to seal it
and then take it for laboratory testing.
Real-time Data Exploration:
If possible, access real-time air quality data using
online resources or local monitoring stations. This
can make the topic more relevant and dynamic.

Case Study:
Present case studies of cities or regions that have
successfully addressed air quality issues. Discuss
the strategies they implemented and the impact
on the community.

Title: The Air We Breathe: A Case Study on Air Quality in Our
Town

Introduction:
Introduce the case study by explaining the importance of air
quality and its impact on health and the environment.
Provide a brief overview of the town or community being
studied.

Objective:
Highlight the goal of the case study – to understand the
current air quality in the town, identify sources of air
Background:
Briefly describe the town, its population, and any
notable features. Discuss why air quality is a
concern in this specific location.

Context:
Provide information on the local environment,
industries, and transportation systems
contributing to the town's air quality.
