HOW TO PLASTER A

CONCRETE WALL
•Plastering is the process of applying
mortar to a concrete surface to
produce a plain and smooth finish. It
is one of the most fundamental task
in masonry.
•It requires knowledge of the needed
materials and their use and the
steps in plastering a wall.
•To produce smooth plastering, mix a
mortar solution composed of three
parts sand and one part cement with
water. Mix this into a sloppy plastic
form ready for plastering.
PROCEDURE
• 1. Stretch a nylon string down the wall
from top to bottom. Use a plumb bob or
a spirit level to determine if the nylon
string is vertical. Do the same on the
right side of the wall. Be sure that the
distance from the string to the surface of
the wall is the same on the strings at
•2. Connect another nylon string from
the top end of the vertical string on
the left side of the wall to the top
end of the vertical string on the right
side. Do the same at the bottom of
the two strings.
•3. Connect another nylon string from
one corner to the opposite corners.
As well as with the opposite corners.
This will now give you an idea of
exactly what the thickness of the
wall is.
•4. Mix thoroughly three parts of
sieved sand and one part cement
with water into a paste form
ready for plastering.
•5. Dampen the concrete wall with
water and clean the wall free of
obstruction, protruding concrete
or other objects.
•6. With a steel float and a pointed
trowel, apply the first coat of mortar
or plaster. This coat is called
scratch or the base coat. Enough
pressure should be applied on the
wooden float, otherwise it may rake
•7. Continue applying the mortar in a
sweeping motion until the entire
surface is covered.
•8. With a straight edge, the surface is
flattened all over the entire wall.
Dampen the surface as the plaster
begins to harden, hence, you should
work fast.
•9. Place the wooden float flat on the
wall and move it in a rotary motion.
Movement removes unnecessary
plaster, thus making the surface
completely flat.
•10. Remove the nylon string and apply
a thin layer of grout ( mixture of
cement and water). Finish brushing the
surface with a squeegee or sponge
dipped in water.
