Explanation of Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a crucial network that removes waste, fights infections, and maintains fluid balance in the body, working alongside the circulatory and immune systems. It consists of lymph, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and various lymphoid organs like the spleen and thymus, which play key roles in immune function. Disorders such as lymphedema, lymphadenopathy, lymphangitis, and lymphoma can affect the lymphatic system, highlighting its importance in overall health.

Your Body's Hidden
Highway
• The lymphatic system is like a hidden network of roads and
security checkpoints in your body, working to keep you healthy. It
runs alongside your blood vessels but does something different—it
removes waste, fights infections, and helps maintain fluid balance.

• Works closely with the circulatory and immune system. It consists of a

network of vessels, lymph nodes, and specialized organs that
transport a fluid called lymph.
Lymph:
• A clear, colorless fluid that circulates throughout the
lymphatic system.

• Contains white blood cells (lymphocytes), proteins, fats,

and waste products.

• Transports immune cells and removes toxins and waste

from tissues.

• The movement of lymph depends on muscle

contractions, breathing, and body movement since
there is no heart-like pump.
Lymphatic Vessels:

• A network of thin-walled tubes that

carry lymph throughout the body.
• Transport lymph from tissues to the
lymph nodes and eventually into the
bloodstream.
• Lymphatic vessels run parallel to blood
vessels but are part of a one-way system
(towards the heart).
Lymph Nodes:
• Small, bean-shaped structures located
throughout the body.
• Act as filters to trap bacteria, viruses, and
cancer cells.
• Found in the neck (cervical), armpits (axillary),
chest, abdomen, and groin (inguinal)
• Contain immune cells (B-cells and T-cells) that
fight infections.
• Swell when fighting infections (e.g., swollen
lymph nodes in the neck during a sore throat).
Lymph Nodes:
• B cells focus on producing antibodies to neutralize infections.
• T cells play a more direct role in killing infected cells and
regulating immune responses.
Lymphoid Organs:

SPLEEN:

• The largest lymphatic organ, located in the upper

left abdomen.

• Filters blood, removes old red blood cells, and fights

infections.

• Stores white blood cells and platelets.

Lymphoid Organs:
TONSILS and ADENOIDS:

• Located in the throat and nasal cavity.

• Help trap and destroy pathogens

entering through the mouth and nose.

• Part of the body’s first line of defense

against infections.

Primary Organs: • Bone marrow for B-cells.
• Thymus for T-lymphocytes.
Lymphoid Organs:

THYMUS:

• Located behind the sternum, above the

heart.

• Produces and matures T-lymphocytes (T-

cells), which are essential for immune
response.

• Most active during childhood and shrinks

with age.
Lymphoid Organs:
BONE MARROW:

• Found inside bones, especially in the hip and

thigh bones.

• Produces red blood cells, white blood cells

(lymphocytes), and platelets.

• Essential for immune function and blood cell

production.

Disorders of Lymphatic
system

Lymphedema

Swelling due to the accumulation of lymph

fluid when lymphatic vessels are blocked or
damaged.
SYMPTOMS:
• Swelling in arms, legs, or other body parts
• Heaviness or tightness in the affected area
• Hardening and thickening of the skin
Lymphadenopathy
Enlargement of lymph nodes due to infection,
inflammation, or cancer.
CAUSES:
• Bacterial or viral infections
• Autoimmune diseases

SYMPTOMS:
• Swollen, tender, or painful lymph nodes
• Fever and fatigue
Lymphangitis
Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels due to
bacterial infection.

CAUSES:
• Bacterial infections
• Open wounds or skin infections

SYMPTOMS:
• Red streaks on the skin
• Swollen and painful lymph nodes
• Skin tenderness and warmth
Lymphoma
A type of cancer that affects lymphocytes
(e.g., hodgkins or non-hodgkins)

CAUSES:
• Genetic mutations in lymphocytes
• Weakened immune system

SYMPTOMS:
• Swollen, painless lymph nodes
• Night sweats
• Unexplained weight loss
