DERIVATION - techniques
by which we obtain the
derivative of a given
function.
Tangent line - a
straight line that
intersects a curve at
exactly one point.
Secant line – a
straight line which
intersects a curve at
more than one
point.
The normal line to the
curve at a given point
is the line
perpendicular to the
tangent line at the
point.
Conic sections
-a circle, a parabola, an
ellipse, or a hyperbola
-the curve referred to the
normal line of the curve

and line t tangent to the graph at point P.
Therefore, we have
DEFINITION 1: Suppose the function f is
continuous at . The tangent line to
the graph of f at the point is

Function
DEFINITION 2: The derivative
of the function f is the
function denoted by f’,
such that its value at a
number in the domain of f
is given by
, Equation 2
if this limit exists.
If is a particular number in
the domain of f, then
,Equation 3
if its limit exists.
Example 1: Find the
derivative of f if and the
equation of the line at point
(2, -2)with a slope of 1.
Example 2: Find the
derivative of f if and the
equation of the line at
point (-1,3).
Example 3: Find the
derivative of f if and the
equation of the line at
point (1, -1)
What is the formula in getting
the slope of the tangent line
at point ?
What about if the line is ?

What is the formula in finding the
derivative of a function if the limit exist?

zero.
2. Power Rule

.
3. Constant Times a Function
 If f(x)= c * g(x), where c is a constant and is

a differentiable function, f’(x)=c * g’(x)

4.Sum or difference of functions
 If where u and v are differentiable then

5. Product Rule
 If f(x)=u*v where u and v are differentiable

then f’(x)=uv’+vu’
6. Quotient Rule
 If then
7. Power of a function
 If where u is a differentiable function and n

is a real number, then .

8. Base e Exponential Function
 If where u is differentiable, then

9.Natural Logarithmic Function

 If , where u is differentiable, then
10.Chain Rule
 If y=f(u)is a differentiable

function, then
The derivative of a function f has several notations as
follows:

f’ Introduced by the French mathematician Joseph Louis

Lagrange(1736-1813), this symbol emphasizes that
the function f’ is derived from the function f and its
value at x is f’(x).
y’ Since y=f(x), then y’=f’(x).
First used by the German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm
Liebniz(1646-1716), it means

where and

read as “the derivative of y with respect to x” and acts as

an operator if y.
Example 2:
Find if y=2x-3.
SUMMARY OF KEY IDEAS
