Lathe Machine
A turning tool: the most versatile machine tool today.
a machine for working metal, in which the piece being
worked is held and rotated while a cutting tool is
applied to it. Used to cut and removed metal part from
work-piece to its desired shape and size.
Compose of five main features
Bench lathe. A type of machine tool that can
produce a variety of custom turned components
with precision and accuracy. This article will go
over the definition, functions, applications,
advantages, and mounting of bench lathes.
Turret Lathes. These types of lathes
are used for machining single work-
pieces sequentially. This means that
several operations are needed to be
performed on a single work piece. With
the turret lathes, sequential operations
can be done on the work piece,
eliminating errors in work alignment.
With this set-up, machining is done
more efficiently. Correspondingly, time
is saved because there is no need to
remove and transfer the work piece to
another machine anymore.
Special Purpose Lathes. As the name
implies, these lathes are used for special
purposes such as heavy-duty production
of identical parts. In addition, these
lathes also perform specific functions
that cannot be performed by the
standard lathes. Some examples of
special purpose lathes include the bench-
type jewellers' lathes, automatic lathes,
crankshaft lathes, duplicating lathes,
multi-spindle lathes, brake drum lathes,
and production lathes among others
Machine operation
1. facing – flattening the end of shaft, shoulder of any
flange or disk shaped part.
2. roughing – reducing quickly to the required size.
3. Finishing – is turning w/ fine cuts for smooth finish.
4. knurling – is the formation of fine ridges on the
periphery of a circular part.
5. parting – is the separation of part.
6. threading – forming of helical contour along the
shaft as in the bolts.
7. grooving- producing a neck on the shaft.
8. drilling- producing a hole on the part.
9. boring – process of enlarging a hole.
10. tapering – creates a conical shape on the shaft.
11. straight turning - the cutting tool travels a parallel to the
axis
of the shaft
Vernier Calipers – are precision tools used
to make accurate measurements to
within .001 in.
