Normal Distribution 1

Normal Distribution is a continuous random variable distribution characterized by a bell-shaped curve, with properties including symmetry, unimodality, and a total area of 1 under the curve. The document provides examples of calculating areas under the normal curve and introduces the standard normal distribution, which has a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1. Various applications and examples are presented, illustrating how to determine probabilities and percentages based on normally distributed data.

Distribution
Normal
Distribution
Normal Distribution is a
distribution of continuous
random variable whose graph
is a bell-shape curve called
normal curve.
Normal
Distribution
a normal distribution has the following properties:

• its curve is bell-shaped.

• its curve is symmetric about the y-axis.
• the mean, median, and mode coincide at the center
of distribution
• the distribution is unimodal
• its curve is asymptotic with respect to the x-axis
• the total area under its curve is 1
Examples
Find the area under the normal curve in each of the following cases:

01 To the left of z = 2 05 To the right of z = -2.59

02 To the left of z = 3.1 06 To the right of z = 0.54
03 To the left of z = -1.52 07 To the right of z = -3.52
04 To the left of z = -2.96 08 To the right of z = 1.47
Examples
Find the area under the normal curve in each of the following cases:

09 Between z = -1 and z = 1

10 Between z = -2 and z = 2

11 Between z = -1.5 and z = -2.5

12 Between z = 3.01 and z = 1.69

Normal
Distribution
Standard normal distribution is a normal distribution with
mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1. Basically, any normal
distribution could be transformed into standard normal
distribution using this formulas:
for population: x   for sample: x x
z  z
 s
this quantity called z-value or z-score. Z-score tells how many
standard deviations a value is away from the mean. A negative
z-score tells that the value is below the mean, while a positive z-
scores tells that the value is above the mean.
Examples
01 The scores of a group of students in a standardize test are
normally distributed with a population mean of 60 and
standard deviation of 8. Answer the following:
a) How many percent of the student got below 72?
b) What part of the group scored between 58 and
76?
c) If there were 250 students who took the test,
about how many students scored higher than 64?
Examples
02 A company pay its employees an average of 70php
per hour and standard deviation of 10php. If the
wages are approximately normally distributed,
a.) how many percent of the employees
receive a salary less than 52php per hour?
b.) how many percent receive a salary more
than 100php per hour?
Examples
03 In a Science test, the mean score is 42 and the
standard deviation is 5. Assuming the scores are
normally distributed, what percent of the score is
a.) greater than 48
b.) less than 50?
c.) between 30 and 48?
Application of
Normal
Distibution
Examples
01 The weight of adults in Barangay X
approaches a normal distribution with a
mean of 52.9kg and standard deviation of
7.2kg. If an adult is chosen at random
from Barangay X, what is the probability
that his weight is above 48.5kg.
Examples
02 The average length of adult rabbit is 30 cm with standard
deviation of 4cm. If their lenghts are normally distributed,
a.) how many percent of adult rabbits are shorter
than 28 cm?
b.) how many percent of adult rabbits exceeds 40
cm in lenght?
c.) if a rabbit is randomly chosen, what is the
probability that it length is between 21 cm and 35 cm?
Examples
03 The weights of 2000 students are normally
distributed with a mean of 46kg and standard
deviation of 2.5kg,
a.) how many students are less than 45 kg?
b.) how many students are heavier than
51.5kg?
c.) if a student from this group is randomly
selected, what is the probability that he/she
weights between 45kg and 49kg?
