Prestressed Concrete

The document discusses the principles of prestressed concrete, comparing it with reinforced concrete and detailing sources of prestress force, methods of prestressing, and effects on structural behavior. It includes calculations for a cantilever beam under specific loads, focusing on determining stresses and eccentricity of prestress forces. The content is prepared by Engr. Edmond D. Tulipan and is intended for educational purposes in the field of civil engineering.

A 6 m long cantilever beam 250 mm x 600 mm carries a uniformly distributed dead load (beam
weight included) of 5 KN/m throughout the length and concentrated live load of 18 KN at the free
end. To prevent excessive deflection of the beam, it is pretensioned with 12 mm dia. Strands
causing a final prestress force of 540 KN.

a. Determine the resulting stress at the bottom fiber at the free end if the center of gravity of
strands coincides with the centroid of the section
b. Determine the resulting stress at the top fiber at the fixed end if the center of gravity of strands
is at 100 mm above the neutral axis of the beam
c. Determine the eccentricity of the pre-stress force at the fixed end such that the resulting stress
at the top fiber of the beam at the fixed end is zero.
