Dear users, please note that you are searching in a German-language database. To make your work easier, we have translated the user
interface and many descriptions of our collections, projects and profile into English. However, the metadata for the
approximately 2 million photographs themselves are only available in German. Exceptions are English keywords in the projects
Weltsichten — Worldviews and
Architectural and Machine Drawings.
When entering search terms in the free text search (search slit), german terms are interpreted with a stemming method, i. e.
different morphological variants of a word are traced back
to their common root, e. g. the declination of Städten or Städte to Stadt. There is no difference between upper and lower case.
By using the operators AND, OR and NOT as well as a word sequence search, you can modify or restrict the search results (see below).
In order to specify a search "literally", you can also restrict the search results using the filters on the left-hand side.
Please note that filters set remain active when a new free text search is performed or when a free text search is modified via the
search slot. The filters set and the search terms used are displayed above the search results in the breadcrump menu. Filters and search terms
can be deactivated using the [x] symbol. Alternatively, you can remove the hooks of the active filters in the filter column on the left side.
How can I combine search terms? Are Boolean operators supported?
When you enter search terms in the free text search (search slit), several terms are automatically linked with the AND operator.
You can also use the OR and NOT operators. Please note that operators must be entered in capital letters:
ei OR kolumbus
ei AND kolumbus
ei NOT kolumbus
You can also group your search terms using parentheses:
ei AND (aufsberg OR schneiders)
finds, for example, photographs of the photographers Lala Aufsberg or Toni Schneiders on the subject of "Ei".
Can I use wildcards?
With the wildcard "*" you can truncate search terms left or right:
*museum includes e. g. Museum, Diözesanmuseum, Nationalmuseum, Stadtmuseum etc.
wolf* finds Wolfen, Wolfenbüttel, Wolfgang, Wolfsburg etc.
Can I search for phrases?
You can search for word groups by using quotation marks:
For example,
"rotes Haus"
finds records that contain the word sequence "rotes Haus", due to the stemming mechanisms also records with, for example, the word sequence "rote Häuser" or "roten Hauses".
