EXPERIMENT No. 3
SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS

ABSTRACT
Specific gravity is a unit-less
expression of a ratio of density of
substance in interest relative to the
reference substance. By knowing the
density of a substance, specific gravity
can be determined. The objectives of this
experiment is to make acquainted the
different instruments used to measure
specific gravity and report measurements
and calculations accurately. The
experiment aims to determine the
specific gravity of solids and liquids.
The group performed the first part of
experiment using a pycnometer and a
standard liquid EtOH to determine the
relative density of the sample. The group
also performed the second part which
involves the measurement of the specific
gravity of liquids. We performed this
experiment by using Mohr-Westphal
balance, Baume Hydrometer, and the
Leach pycnometer.

ANSWER TO GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. Differentiate specific gravity and
density.
Specific Gravity is the ratio of the
density of the water. While density is the
mass per unit volume of a substance
under specified conditions of pressure
and temperature.

2. If 54.96 mL of oil weighs 52.78g,
what is its specific gravity?

Density =

=

= 0.9603 g/mL
Specific Gravity =

= 0.9603
3. A pycnometer weighs 50.00g. When
filled with water it weighs 100.00 g.
When filled with oil, it weighs 94.00 g.
Determine the specific gravity of the oil.
Solution:

SG =

= 0.88
4. An insoluble powder weighs 12.00g.
A pycnometer, weighing 21.00g when
empty, weighs 121.00g when filled with
water. When the powder is introduced
into the emptied pycnometer, and the
pycnometer is filled with water, the three
together weighs 130.00g. What is the
specific gravity of the powder?
