Name: - Bio 180 Problem Set Ii

This document contains 7 sections that provide probability and statistics problems. Section I provides information about the heights of 1200 college students and asks for the probabilities of various height ranges. Section II asks for probabilities related to a survey of nursing students. Section III asks for probabilities related to the number of live insects found on plots of land. Section IV asks for a probability related to mussels infected with parasites. Sections V and VI ask for calculations of means, variances, standard errors, and confidence intervals. Section VII asks for standard error, confidence interval, and normality testing calculations for plant height data.

BIO 180 PROBLEM SET II

The heights of all the 1200 College of Science students enrolled this semester have a mean of 65
inches with a standard deviation of 3.2 inches. Assuming that the heights are normally distributed:
1. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has a height below 62 inches?

2. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has a height greater than 70 inches?

3. How many of the students have heights between 62 inches and 70 inches?

4. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has a height exactly 62 inches?

II.

In a survey of nursing students pursuing a masters degree, 75% stated that they expect to be
promoted to a higher position within one month after receiving the degree. If this percentage holds
for the entire population, find, for a sample of 15, the probability that the number expecting a
promotion within a month after receiving their degree is:
1. Six

2. At least seven

3. No more than five

4. Less than six and more than nine

III.

A large area of land was sprayed with an insecticide. Later the area was examined for live insects by
randomly selecting several 1sq.m plots and counting the number of live insects per square. Past
experience has shown the average number of live insects per square meter after spraying to be 0.5.
Find the probability that a selected square meter will contain:
1. Exactly one live insect

2. No live insects

3. Exactly four live insects

4. One or more live insects

IV.

In a certain population of mussels, Mytilus edulis, 2% of the individuals are infected with intestinal
parasite. A marine biologist plans to examine 200 randomly chosen mussels from the population.
What is the probability that 13 of the sampled mussels will be infected?

V.

Suppose a population consists of the following values: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. Construct the sampling

distribution of the mean based on samples of size 2 selected without replacement. Find the mean and
variance of the sampling distribution.

VI.

A sample of 100 subjects with chronic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears were examined. The
researchers found that the mean laxity value among the subjects was 17.4mm. The population
standard deviation among those with such condition is known to be 4.3 mm.
1. What is the standard error of the mean?

2. Construct the 95% confidence interval for the mean assuming the sample came from a population
exhibiting normality.

VII.

The following are heights (in inches) of different individuals of a certain plant.
a.

For each sample, calculate the standard error of the mean

b.

Determine for each sample the 95% Confidence Interval.

c.

Test for normality of each sample using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.
