Stage 3: Build Learning Plan

Materials/Resources Needed:
- PowerPoint lesson
- Picture from National Geographic
- Handout for everyone (25 copies)

Learning Activities:
- Introduce the lesson with a PowerPoint explaining what visual teaching strategies are and what
they can be used for (5 min)
- Visual Teaching Strategy activity (5 min) using a picture from National Geographics archive,
ask students to point out details and have a short student led discussion.

- Why do you think they are doing this?
- Finish Lesson with PowerPoint explaining the pros and cons of Visual teaching strategies, and
how to adapt them for every lesson
- Short quiz ~ have students write down one way they believe visual teaching strategies can be
helpful in their own classroom, three short questions on the PowerPoint

Rationale:
Visual teaching strategies can be utilized in so many ways other than for examining artwork. This
strategy can be used to strengthened skills in finding details, analyzing information and making
inferences. These are important skills that can be applied to a variety of lesson plans. This lesson
can be used as a way to get students to verbalize their own ideas, listen to other opinions, and it
can build strong communication skills among classmates.
