1 Hot Work is any work using an open-flame or spark-producing apparatus. Hot
work includes, but is not limited to, welding, cutting, burning, grinding, and any related heat-producing jobs that could ignite combustible materials or flammable atmospheres. 2 It is OK to perform Hot work outside of a Designated Safe Hot Work Area if it is for only 2 minutes. 3 Workplace fires have a great financial impact on businesses, but people do not get hurt or killed. 4 Any fire extinguisher can put out any fire. 5 If we perform hot work in environments with large concentrations of Flammable liquids, stored or manufactured, we need to test the atmosphere with an explosive meter. 6 When we use an explosive meter to determine environmental concentrations of flammable liquid vapor, the reading required to perform hot work is zero percent L-F-L/L-E-L. 7 Permit-Required Areas are areas where it is not practical to move the work to a designated SAFE HOT WORK AREA. 8 The permitted time of a Hot Work Permit can last up to 36 hours. 9 The Hot Work permit is required to be approved by the hot work operator and supervision. 10 Once approved, the permit is to be posted at the work area for the duration of the task. 11 A fire watch is required when Combustible material is within 35 feet of the point of operation. Combustibles are more than 35 feet away, but are easily ignited by sparks. Wall or floor openings within a 35-foot radius expose combustible material in adjacent areas and when Combustible materials opposite of walls or ceilings can be ignited by conduction or radiant heat. 12 If the fire watch has a fire extinguisher readily available and is trained in its use, the fire watch does not need to be familiar with the local alarm or emergency notification system. 13 Hot work that is to be performed in a confined space shall need a Confined Space Permit too. 14 Tanks, containers or vessel that previously contained flammable, explosive or toxic materials do not have to be cleaned prior to cutting or welding.
