2.1.The data given below refers to the direction, duration and intensity of wind at a particular site
over a period of 8 years. Draw the two types of wind rose diagrams. Determine the calm
period and the orientation of runway for each type. Determine the percentage of time in year
during which this runway can be used with satisfactory wind conditions. Make suitable
assumptions if required.

2.2.The length of a runway under standard conditions is 1500 m. The airport is to be provided at
an elevation of 110 m above mean sea level. The airport reference temperature is 22oC. The
construction plan includes the following data.

Determine the actual length of runway to be provided. Apply corrections for elevation and
temperature as per ICAO and for gradient as per FAA specifications.

2.3. The monthly mean temperatures of the atmosphere, at a particular site, where an airport has
to be developed, are given below. Determine the airport reference temperature. If the site is at
mean sea level, determine the actual runway length. The runway is assumed to be level.

2.4. Assume an airport pavement is to be designed for the following forecast traffic:
A320-100 Dual 1800 150,796
B737-800 Dual 6,000 174,700
B757-300 Dual Tandem 3,600 271,000
B707-320 Dual Tandem 2,400 327,000

Determine design aircraft and equivalent annual departures of design aircraft, as per FAA
method.

2.5. A flexible pavement is to be designed for a dual gear aircraft having a gross weight of 34000
kg and 6000 annual equivalent departures of the design aircraft. Design CBR values for the
sub base and sub grade are 25 and 7 respectively. Design a flexible pavement with
bituminous surface, base, and sub base over the sub grade. Draw a designed section of
pavement layers.

2.6.A rigid pavement is to be designed for dual tandem aircraft having a gross weight of 350,000
pounds (160 000 kg) and for 6,000 annual equivalent departures of the design aircraft. The
sub grade modulus of reaction is 100 pci (25 MN/m3). Concrete mix designs indicate a
concrete grade of M30 can be readily produced with locally available aggregates. What will
be the thickness of rigid pavement over the sub grade? If sub-base of CBR value 20 is used,
what will be the thickness of rigid pavement over the sub base? Draw a designed section of
pavement layers.

Since maximum wind coverage is obtained in the N-S orientation of


cross-wind template, it is the best orientation for RWY.
