The document summarizes a student's self-assessment of their teaching rehearsal using a Direct Instruction model. The student analyzed their lesson plan, instruction techniques, and student engagement. Some strengths identified were preparation, modeling, and adapting their plan. Weaknesses included talking too much instead of having students learn sections, awkward body posture, and use of filler words. Next steps are to focus on text, diction, dynamics and phrasing with each section of the piece.

MUED 376: Choral Music, Materials & Techniques (M2

& T)
Direct Instruction: Self-Assessment
Instructions: Select a 4 - 7 minute clip from one of your practicum teaching rehearsals
and review your direct instruction through answering the following questions. Please
write 3- 7 sentence answers for each question. Be thorough and specific.

1. Had I written out my script in a direct instruction model? Would it have

helped my lesson delivery and success if I had done so?
I did write out my script for this rehearsal in DI using a similar model as
my previous lesson. I learned from last time and I knew my lesson a lot
better but unfortunately the recording cut off so I missed a bit of the
rehearsal.
2. What was my ratio of 1, 2 and 3s?
My ratio has around a 1:2 ratio of 2s to 1s. Im still working on getting
that ratio to be a more 1:1 ratio so Im not rambling as much as I do. My
3s were a lot better and a lot more direct this lesson!
3. Were my students doing lots of 2s the entire time? Were they on task?
The students were wonderful and even when I was unclear were on task
and trying to do everything I was asking them to do with the music.
4. Did I talk too much between every 2 and back to a 1?
While I did still talk too much between 2s and back to 1s it was not nearly
as much as I did last lesson. I have been getting better at controlling my
rambling and with Dr. Vs help I kept on track of what sequencing I
needed to do.
5. What kind of 3s did I use in this clip? Do I need to improve my use of 3s
and if so, in what way?
My threes in this clip are a lot better and a lot more direct toward the
music but I need to work on my fluidity of speech! I was tripping over my
words a bit while trying to tell the choir what they were doing right and
that made the compliment have less of an impact.
6. Were there any DI errors in this script?
I gave too many directions to each section that were spaced apart so the
choir was unsure of what I was actually asking for. I also think I went too
slow for the choir and I needed to dial it forward to match the pace they
were wanting to go at.
7. Did I turn any 1os into a 1a?
Not in this rehearsal!
8. What was the pattern of the best chunk in this teaching sequence? (For
example, 1a, 2p, 1a, 1d, 2v, 1o, 1a , 2p, 3sra)
Again, the 1a, 1d, 2p, 1d, 2p, 1d, 2p, 1d, 2p, 3sra was my go to pattern that
worked for the class. I added more steps this time before a 3 though.
9. To summarize, what were the strengths of my Direct Instruction Model in
this lesson?
One of my strengths with this lesson was my preparation on the modeling
for the different parts of the choir. I also was a lot more confident because
I practiced my lesson a lot more for this rehearsal (Practice makes
perfect!) and I was better able to change and adapt my plan because of
this.
10. To summarize, what were the weaknesses of my Direct Instruction Model in
this lesson?
Once again, I spoke way too much instead of just letting my choir jump
into learning each Gloria section. I also was standing quite awkwardly
several times in the rehearsal as a sort of power pose with my hand on
my hip and I didnt like that at all. I also said, you guys a lot and I
would like to eliminate that phrase from my dictionary!
11. What are my next steps?
My next steps will be to go over the text of each verse and solidify each
section with the diction I want from the choir. I would also like to add in
dynamics and phrasing into the piece.
