A Personal Statement of Music Education Philosophy

Noted American Jazz composer Roy Ayers states: "The true beauty of music is that it

connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers." Within this

quote is the core of my teaching philosophy, that a universal understanding of music among all

people can easily bridge connections between students, teachers, our country and the world.

Through music curricula, students can be both empowered and encouraged to explore those

connections. In experiencing music, students are guided into exploring different cultures,

broadening their critical thinking skills, growing as individuals, and growing as an ensemble.

These skills help create well-rounded and well-educated students; an effective and dedicated

teacher is the necessary catalyst who guides students to these realms of critical thinking and

discovery.

Effective teachers are those who behave in a professional manner, who take initiative,

and who are motivated to see their students grow to their fullest potential. Being professional

with students in a subject such as music is sometimes challenging, yet, it is necessary in order to

create a safe and fair classroom culture. In an open and supportive classroom, where both

students and teachers know what is expected, a greater sense of freedom to experience music to

its fullest can be created and achieved for all participants.

Furthermore, a teacher’s initiative to accommodate each and every individual student’s

learning and pace demonstrate higher level thinking skills essential to effective teaching and

leadership. Learning never truly stops once one graduates and begins working as a teacher; it is

something that is continuously developing and growing. For me, identifying the skills needed to

become an effective instructor is the first step towards becoming one.

Music in schools is necessary as it is a catalyst for social and emotional development in

critical years of a child’s life. Music provides a commonality between students that promotes

friendships between those of different backgrounds. Studies have also shown that music in

school helps create well-rounded students that are focused, hardworking, with a high self-esteem

and a positive overall opinion of school. I desire to be such a catalyst for music, someone who

leads students into becoming lifelong learners and well-educated individuals who carry the

message of beautiful music with them wherever their lives lead. For the true beauty of music lies

in the connections it forges between people and the messages we share as a unified ensemble and

community of learners.
